The lock tab washer is a key component that prevents the nut on the sideshift clamp ram from coming loose. If you notice that the backhoe's sideshift has excessive play, you hear knocking during its operation, and the ram nut is loose, it's a sign that the washer has broken or been damaged. Ignoring this problem leads to damage to the ram's thread and wear in the carriage bores, which is one of the more expensive repairs on the machine.

A lock tab washer is a single-use part. Bending the tab for removal weakens the material. Reusing it risks cracking and loosening the nut.
Before bending the tab, tighten the ram nut with a torque wrench to the value in the service manual. This will ensure correct adjustment of the wear pads.
Locking washers should always be replaced in pairs (left and right) to ensure even and secure locking.
Removing the nut is a perfect opportunity to inspect the condition of the teflon wear pads. If they are worn, replace them to avoid costly repairs in the future.
Answer: Not directly. The play is caused by worn teflon pads. However, a loose nut (due to a damaged washer) can drastically increase the play and accelerate wear.
Question: Why can't I reuse my old washer?Answer: This washer is designed to be bent once. Straightening and re-bending the metal causes it to fatigue and weaken, which risks cracking and losing its locking ability.
Question: How tight should I tighten the nut before bending the tab?Answer: The nut must be tightened to the torque specified in the machine's service manual. This is crucial for the proper operation of the sideshift. Insufficient torque will leave play, while excessive torque will destroy the wear pads.
