Used Excavator Undercarriage Inspection – A Buyer's Checklist
Used Excavator Undercarriage Inspection – A Buyer's Checklist
The Most Expensive Component You Must Check
Found the perfect used excavator at an attractive price? Before you sign the contract, spend 15 minutes thoroughly inspecting the tracked undercarriage. This component generates the highest operating costs, and its condition is the best indicator of how the machine was treated. A neglected undercarriage can mean a necessary investment of thousands of euros. This checklist will help you assess the risk and give you a powerful argument for price negotiation.
Detailed Undercarriage Inspection Checklist
Ask the seller to clean the mud from the undercarriage – a reliable assessment is impossible without it. It's best if the machine can be slightly lifted on one side.
1. Sprockets
What to look for? Carefully inspect the teeth. Are the tips pointy? Are they hooked to one side ("shark fin" effect)?
Red Flag: Sharp, worn teeth mean the sprocket needs to be replaced. More importantly, it almost certainly means the chain is worn too. Remember, installing a new chain on a worn sprocket will destroy it immediately.
2. Chains and Bushings
What to look for? Look at the bushings (the metal cylinders) where they contact the sprocket. Are they heavily worn on one side? Is there scalloping? Also check the sides of the links for wear from rubbing against roller flanges.
Red Flag: Heavily worn or cracked bushings mean the chain is at the end of its life.
3. Track Rollers (Bottom Rollers)
What to look for? Check for three things: oil leaks (dark, greasy buildup), flat spots on the running surface, and the condition of the flanges (are they sharp or cracked?). If the machine is lifted, try to wiggle each roller side-to-side.
Red Flag: Any oil leak disqualifies a roller and means it needs immediate replacement. Significant play and sharp flanges also indicate advanced wear.
4. Tensioner System
What to look for? Check if the track is properly tensioned. Ask the seller how often it needs tensioning. Look for signs of grease leaking from around the adjuster valve.
Red Flag: A very loose track that cannot be tensioned, or visible signs of fresh grease near the valve, may indicate damaged seals in the track adjuster cylinder.
5. Final Drives (Travel Motors)
What to look for? This is the most critical and expensive component. Thoroughly inspect the final drive housing for any oil leaks, especially from the main seal behind the sprocket. During a test drive, listen for loud grinding noises and check if the machine travels in a straight line and has good power.
Red Flag: Any leak from a final drive is an alarm bell and signals a very expensive repair or replacement.
Final Assessment and Negotiating Point
The rule is simple:
A cheap machine with a worn-out undercarriage is not a bargain, it's a financial trap. The cost of a full undercarriage replacement is a massive investment. If your inspection reveals advanced wear, you have two options: walk away from the deal, or use it as a very strong argument to negotiate the price down by the amount of the future repair.
