Anatomy of a Tracked Undercarriage – Get to Know the Key Components
The Foundation of Your Machine
If the engine is the heart of the machine, then the tracked undercarriage is its legs and spine. It is one of the hardest working and most expensive systems to maintain on any excavator or dozer. Understanding its components and how they work together is the absolute foundation for proper diagnostics, service, and avoiding costly failures. In this article, we'll walk you through the anatomy of a typical steel tracked undercarriage.
Key Components of a Steel Undercarriage
1. Track Chains
This is the skeleton of the entire track. It consists of a series of interconnected steel links. Each connection is made up of a pin and a bushing. Track chains transfer the driving force from the sprocket to the ground and form the path for the track rollers. They are divided into dry chains (in smaller machines) and sealed and lubricated tracks (SALT) in larger ones, where the internal pins and bushings operate in an oil bath, significantly extending their life.
2. Sprocket
This is the toothed wheel, usually located at the rear of the undercarriage frame, which is directly connected to the final drive (travel motor). Its job is to engage with the bushings of the track chain and set the entire track in motion. The correct pitch match between the sprocket's teeth and the chain is crucial for smooth operation and low wear.
3. Idler with Tensioner
A large, smooth wheel located at the front of the undercarriage frame. It serves two key functions: it guides the track chain and, via the tensioning mechanism, maintains the correct track tension. The tensioning system consists of a powerful spring and a grease cylinder that allows for track tension adjustment.
4. Track Rollers / Bottom Rollers
This is the set of smaller wheels located at the bottom of the frame, on which the chain rolls. Their job is to transfer the entire weight of the machine onto the track. They come in two types: single flange and double flange. Their alternating arrangement prevents the chain from sliding off sideways.
5. Carrier Rollers / Top Rollers
Smaller wheels mounted on top of the undercarriage frame (not present on all machines, especially mini-excavators). Their sole task is to support the upper section of the track chain to prevent it from sagging and hitting the frame, which would cause noise and excessive wear.
6. Track Shoes / Pads
These are the steel plates bolted to the chain links. They form the direct contact surface with the ground and are responsible for traction. They come in different versions, e.g., single, double, or triple grouser, depending on the type of ground the machine works on.
An Interconnected System
Remember that all undercarriage components wear out as a system. A worn sprocket will quickly destroy a new chain, and worn rollers will cause uneven wear on the other components. Therefore, regular inspection and a comprehensive assessment of the entire undercarriage are crucial, not just a single element.
