7 Operator Mistakes That Destroy a Tracked Undercarriage
7 Operator Mistakes That Destroy a Tracked Undercarriage
Good Habits Are the Cheapest Maintenance
A tracked undercarriage can account for up to 50% of a construction machine's total maintenance costs. It's a massive expense, but interestingly, a large part of it isn't caused by hard work, but by bad operator habits. Conscious and technically correct operation can double the life of tracks, rollers, and sprockets. In this guide, we've compiled the 7 most common and costly mistakes that you can avoid to save thousands.
The Seven Deadly Sins of an Operator
1. Driving Too Fast, Especially in Reverse
The Problem: Driving at high speed (the "rabbit" mode) drastically accelerates the wear of all moving undercarriage parts. Worse, high-speed reverse travel causes several times faster wear on chain bushings and sprocket teeth because they are engaging on the "wrong" side.
The Solution: Use high-speed travel only for longer distances on flat ground. Whenever possible, avoid high-speed reverse travel.
2. Unnecessary, Sharp Turns and Counter-Rotation
The Problem: Sharp turns and counter-rotation (one track forward, one backward) generate immense side forces that literally "pry" the chains off the rollers. This causes accelerated wear on the edges of track rollers, idlers, and the chain links themselves.
The Solution: Plan your movements. Make wider, arcing turns instead of pivoting in place, even if it requires an extra maneuver.
3. Working Across a Slope
The Problem: Prolonged work or travel across a slope puts constant, one-sided stress on the undercarriage. The rollers, idlers, and chains on the downhill side are subjected to much greater loads, leading to uneven and very rapid wear.
The Solution: If possible, always work by driving straight up or down a slope. Avoid long periods of working sideways on a hill.
4. Neglecting to Clean the Undercarriage
The Problem: Packed mud, sand, and rocks act like grinding paste, mercilessly wearing down all moving components. In winter, frozen mud can jam rollers and cause extreme tension, even leading to a broken chain.
The Solution: Take 5 minutes at the end of each workday to use a shovel or pressure washer to clean debris from around the rollers, sprockets, and idlers.
5. Ignoring Correct Track Tension
The Problem: This is sin number one. A track that is too loose can de-track and hammer the components, while a track that is too tight creates immense friction that destroys everything – chains, idlers, sprockets, and even the bearings in the final drives.
The Solution: Regularly check the track tension according to the manual (we described this in detail in our previous article!).
6. Using Tracks as a "Hammer" or "Lever"
The Problem: Hitting curbs, rocks, or demolition debris with the side of the tracks creates powerful shock loads. This leads to damage on the roller flanges and can even crack chain links.
The Solution: Operate with precision and awareness. The undercarriage is for moving, not for ramming.
7. Excessive Machine "Rocking"
The Problem: Aggressive, repetitive back-and-forth movements to compact soil or dislodge an object put huge, jarring loads on the sprockets and the entire drive system, including the travel motors.
The Solution: Let the bucket or other attachment do the work. Avoid unnecessary, violent jerking of the entire machine.
Even the best operator can't stop natural wear and tear.
If your undercarriage, despite your best efforts, is showing signs of wear, it's time to replace components. In our offer, you will find high-quality, durable undercarriage parts from the KERTRACK brand. In case of a travel motor failure, we will help you select a reliable replacement from TRK TRACK SOLUTIONS. Contact us to restore your machine to full working order!
