How to Correctly Measure and Read a Rubber Track Size? A Step-by-Step Guide.
How to Correctly Measure and Read a Rubber Track Size? A Step-by-Step Guide.
Avoid a Costly Mistake
Replacing the rubber tracks on a mini-excavator or other compact machine is a standard maintenance task. However, purchasing the wrong size is one of the most common and costly mistakes, leading to downtime and return hassles. Fortunately, identifying the correct size is easy if you know what to look for. This guide will show you how to do it in a few simple steps.
Understanding Track Size: The 3-Step Formula
The standard size of a rubber track is always given in the same format, consisting of three key values:
Width (mm) x Pitch (mm) x Number of Links
Example: 300 x 52.5 x 84
- Width (300): The width of the track in millimeters.
- Pitch (52.5): The distance from the center of one steel link (tooth) to the center of the next, measured in millimeters. This is the most critical and trickiest parameter to measure.
- Number of Links (84): The total number of steel links (teeth) on the inside of the track that engage with the drive sprocket.
How to Measure a Track? Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Check for Markings on the Track
Before you start measuring, carefully inspect your old track. Many manufacturers stamp or print the size directly on the rubber, usually on the inside or outside edge. If you find a string of numbers like "400x72.5x76", your job is done!
Step 2: Measure the Width
If there are no markings on the track, grab a tape measure. Measure the total width of the track in millimeters from one edge to the other. This is your first parameter.
Step 3: Measure the Pitch
This is the most important measurement. You need to measure the distance from the center of one steel link to the center of the next.
PRO TIP: It's easiest to place the tape measure on the leading edge of one link and measure the distance to the leading edge of the next link. The result in millimeters is your pitch.
Step 4: Count the Number of Links
Count all the steel links (teeth) running along the inner circumference of the track.
PRO TIP: To avoid losing count, mark the first link you count with chalk or a marker. The resulting number is your third and final parameter.
Important Additional Notes
- Short Pitch vs. Long Pitch: In some machines, the track rollers run on every other link. Tracks for such machines are called "long pitch." However, the principle of measuring the pitch (the distance between adjacent links) remains the same.
- Guide Type: Pay attention to the arrangement of the guide rollers and the teeth on the drive sprocket. Although 99% of machines use standard guiding, there are exceptions.
Do you have the measurements but are still in doubt or can't find the size?
Don't risk a mistake! It's always better to ask an expert. Having the machine's make, model, and the measured dimensions will make our job much easier. Contact us, and our advisors will help you verify the size and select the perfect track for your machine.
