Hardox and Strenx Steel: The Secret to Modern Machinery's Strength and Lighter Weight
Hardox and Strenx Steel: The Secret to Modern Machinery's Strength and Lighter Weight
Lighter, Stronger, More Efficient
Looking at a modern JCB telehandler or a Volvo excavator, you might notice that their booms are slimmer and their buckets lighter than on machines from 20 years ago, despite offering greater lift capacity and durability. How is this possible? The secret lies in a material revolution. Manufacturers are massively shifting from ordinary structural steel to advanced high-strength steels. Two key names everyone in the industry should know are Hardox and Strenx.
Two Types of Steel, Two Different Jobs
Although both brands come from the same Swedish manufacturer (SSAB), they play completely different roles in a construction machine.
1. Wear-Resistant Steel (e.g., Hardox) – Your Machine's Shield
What is it? A steel with extremely high hardness (measured on the Brinell scale, e.g., Hardox 450 HB, 500 HB), whose main purpose is resistance to abrasion and impact.
Where is it used? Wherever material rubs, hits, and scrapes:
- Cutting edges and side plates of buckets.
- Beds of dump trucks.
- Reinforcements on attachments in high-wear areas.
The use of wear-resistant steel in attachments ensures that buckets and grapples maintain their shape and durability for much longer.
2. High-Strength Structural Steel (e.g., Strenx) – The Machine's Skeleton
What is it? A steel that, at a much thinner gauge (and weight), offers the same or greater strength against bending and cracking as traditional, thick steel.
Where is it used? In key structural components where every kilogram counts:
- Booms and arms of excavators and telehandlers.
- Chassis frames of machines.
- Frames of low-bed trailers.
Thanks to this steel, a modern Manitou telehandler can have greater reach and capacity without losing stability.
Specialty Steels in the Undercarriage
What about components that must be both hard and impact-resistant, like teeth or sprockets? Here, special alloy steels are used, which get their properties from precise heat treatment.
- Manganese Steel (Hadfield Steel): Used for casting teeth and crusher jaws. It has a unique property – it work-hardens under impact. The harder it works, the harder its surface becomes, while maintaining a tough, crack-resistant core.
- Boron Steel: Steel with added boron, which radically increases its hardenability. After heat treatment, it achieves extreme hardness and wear resistance. It's the ideal material for cutting edges, grader blades, and track shoes.
The use of these advanced alloys is the secret to the durability of high-quality undercarriage parts, such as those from the KERTRACK brand.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the difference between Hardox 450 and Hardox 500?
The number indicates the approximate hardness on the Brinell scale (HB). Hardox 500 is harder and more wear-resistant, but also more difficult to machine (cut, weld) and slightly more brittle than Hardox 450.
2. Can Hardox steel be welded?
Yes, but it requires special technology, appropriate welding consumables, and pre-heating the material. Improper welding can lead to cracks in the weld zone.
3. Why aren't pins and bushings made from Hardox?
Because their key characteristic is not just surface hardness, but also core toughness. They are made from alloy steels and then surface-hardened (e.g., by induction), which provides the perfect compromise between wear resistance and fracture toughness. This is the domain of specialists like CORESPEX.
Material quality is the foundation of reliability.
When choosing spare parts, pay attention to what they are made of. Investing in HIMACORE attachments made of Hardox steel or KERTRACK undercarriage components made of properly hardened boron steel is a guarantee of longer life and fewer downtimes. Contact us, and we will help you choose components that will truly stand the test of time!
