5 Symptoms of Worn Track Rollers in an Excavator – When is Replacement Necessary?
5 Symptoms of Worn Track Rollers in an Excavator – When is Replacement Necessary?
A Small Component with a Huge Impact
Track rollers (bottom rollers) are inconspicuous but incredibly important components of a tracked undercarriage. They can be compared to the wheels of a train – they carry the entire weight of the machine on the tracks. They operate in extreme conditions, under immense load, and in constant contact with dirt, sand, and rocks. Their wear is a natural process, but ignoring the warning signs can trigger a domino effect, leading to the destruction of much more expensive components. This guide will teach you how to recognize when your machine's rollers are calling for help.
5 Key Symptoms of Worn Track Rollers
1. Flattened or "Squared-Off" Roller Treads
How to spot it? The round surface of the roller on which the chain runs becomes flat or develops angular shapes. The machine may start to "bounce" or vibrate more than usual during travel.
Why is it a problem? A flattened roller does not rotate smoothly but instead hammers against each subsequent chain link, causing impact damage. This drastically accelerates chain wear and causes operator discomfort.
2. Worn or Cracked Flanges
How to spot it? The outer edges (flanges) of the rollers become thin as a knife, sharp, or even crack and break off.
Why is it a problem? The flanges guide the chain and prevent it from de-tracking. When they are worn, the risk of the track coming off, especially during turns or on slopes, increases dramatically. Sharp edges also cut into the sides of the chain links.
3. Oil Leaks from the Roller
How to spot it? The roller and its surrounding area are covered with a greasy, black film that attracts dirt. There are clear signs of leaking oil.
Why is it a problem? This is a critical warning sign! It means the roller's internal seals have failed and lubrication is lost. Such a roller will soon seize and lock up. A seized roller will not turn, and the chain rubbing against it will be destroyed in no time.
4. Excessive Side Play and "Wobbling"
How to spot it? After lifting the undercarriage, try to move the roller from side to side. If it has significant play or "wobbles" on its axis, it's a bad sign.
Why is it a problem? Excessive play indicates that the internal bushings or bearings are completely worn out. The roller is no longer guiding the track straight, causing uneven wear on all other undercarriage components.
5. Loud, Grinding Noises
How to spot it? During travel, you hear a rhythmic grinding, scraping, or squealing sound coming from the undercarriage.
Why is it a problem? This is the audible signal of a failing bearing inside the roller. It is often the final warning before the roller seizes completely.
When is Replacement Necessary?
The rule is simple – the sooner you react, the less you'll pay. Remember the domino effect: a single damaged roller destroys other components with every rotation of the track.
- REPLACE IMMEDIATELY IF: You notice any oil leakage or if a roller is seized and doesn't turn freely.
- PLAN SERVICE SOON IF: The rollers are significantly flattened, the flanges are razor-sharp, or there is excessive side-to-side play.
Have you diagnosed worn rollers on your machine? Don't wait for a more serious failure!
Replacing worn rollers is an investment that protects much more expensive components, like track chains and travel motors. In our offer, you will find a full range of high-quality track and carrier rollers from the KERTRACK brand. And if the failure is more severe, we can also help you select new sprockets, idlers, chains, and even reliable TRK TRACK SOLUTIONS travel motors. Contact us!
