How to Spot a Worn Sprocket? Why You Must Replace it With the Track?
How to Spot a Worn Sprocket? Why You Must Replace it With the Track?
The "Silent Killer" of New Tracks
The drive sprocket is the key component that transfers all the power from the travel motor to the track. Its wear is often less visible than that of rollers or the tracks themselves, but it has an equally destructive impact on the entire system. One of the most expensive mistakes you can make during undercarriage service is replacing the track chains without simultaneously replacing the sprockets. In this article, we'll explain why this is so important.
How to Recognize Sprocket Wear
Inspecting the drive sprocket is simple if you know what to look for. It's best to assess its condition after thoroughly cleaning the undercarriage.
- Sharp, "Pointy" Teeth: This is the most classic and easiest symptom to spot. A new sprocket has teeth with relatively flat or rounded tips. As it wears, the metal erodes, and the tips of the teeth become sharp and pointed.
- The "Shark Fin" Effect: This is an advanced stage of wear. The teeth become asymmetrical and hooked in one direction (the direction of travel), resembling a shark's fin. Such teeth will literally "eat" the bushings of a new chain.
- Reduced Tooth Thickness at the Base: If the teeth become visibly thinner at their base, it indicates extreme material wear and a risk of them breaking off under load.
- Characteristic Knocking and Jumping: During travel, especially under load or when changing direction, you might hear a loud, rhythmic clunking sound. This is a sign that the chain bushings are no longer engaging properly with the worn teeth and the chain is "jumping".
Why Always Replace the Sprocket with the Chain?
THE GOLDEN RULE
Imagine putting a new, expensive bicycle chain on old, worn gears. What happens? The new chain will skip, make noise, and wear out at an express pace. Exactly the same principle applies to a tracked undercarriage, but on a much larger and more expensive scale.
As a track chain works, its pins and bushings wear down, causing it to "stretch" – the distance between individual bushings (the pitch) increases. The sprocket, working with this stretched chain, also wears down, and its teeth adapt to this new, incorrect pitch.
Installing a new chain (with a perfect, factory pitch) onto an old, worn sprocket has catastrophic consequences:
- Destruction of the New Chain: The sharp edges of the worn teeth act like a file, grinding down and destroying the new chain bushings. You can ruin a new chain in a few hundred hours instead of several thousand.
- Loss of Power and Efficiency: The mismatch causes increased friction and power loss.
- Risk of Major Failure: A jumping chain generates powerful shock loads that can damage not only the undercarriage but also the expensive travel motor.
Planning to replace your track chains? Don't forget the sprockets!
The cost of a new sprocket is a small fraction of the price of a new track chain. Replacing it is the easiest way to protect your investment. In our offer, you will find perfectly matched chains and sprockets from the KERTRACK brand. And if the problem also involves the drive system, our experts will help you select the right TRK TRACK SOLUTIONS travel motor. Contact us to service your undercarriage correctly!
