Greasing a Tracked Undercarriage: Where Are the Zerks and How Often to Grease?
Greasing a Tracked Undercarriage: Where Are the Zerks and How Often to Do It?
The Cheapest Insurance for Your Machine
Regular greasing is one of the simplest, cheapest, and yet most important maintenance tasks. For a tracked undercarriage, which operates in constant contact with dirt, water, and sand, it is absolutely crucial for its longevity. Fresh grease not only reduces friction but, most importantly, creates a protective barrier and pushes old contaminants out. Despite this, the lubrication points on an undercarriage are often overlooked. This guide will show you where to find them and how to properly care for them.
Where to Find the Grease Zerks on an Undercarriage?
The location of grease points can vary depending on the manufacturer and machine size, but the key locations in a typical excavator undercarriage are consistent.
Key Point: The Idler Wheel Axle
This is the most important and almost always present lubrication point on an undercarriage. The idler wheel at the front rotates on an axle set in a yoke. The grease fittings (zerks) for lubricating this axle are usually located on the side of the yoke or the track frame. Often there are two fittings – one for each side of the wheel. Neglecting to grease them leads to seizure of the slide bearings and destruction of the very expensive idler and its axle.
What About Track and Carrier Rollers?
It's important to know that in the vast majority of modern construction machines, track and carrier rollers are maintenance-free. They are "sealed for life" components and do not have grease fittings. Trying to find them is pointless. Only in some very old or specialized designs might you find rollers with grease points.
Other Potential Locations
On some machines (e.g., dozers) with oscillating track frames, there may be additional grease fittings on the main pivot pins that connect the frames to the machine's body.
Always check the manual!
The most reliable source of information on the location and schedule of lubrication is always your machine's operator manual. Look for a lubrication chart or diagram.
How Often and How to Grease?
Frequency:
This depends on the working conditions. The standard interval is usually every 50 operating hours. However:
- If you are working in water, deep mud, or very fine dust, grease the undercarriage daily, at the end of the workday. This will help push out water and contaminants from the bushings.
Proper Technique:
- Clean the zerk fitting before connecting the grease gun. Pumping dirt in with the grease defeats the purpose.
- Pump until you see fresh grease. Proper lubrication involves pumping in grease until the old, dirty grease is completely purged and fresh grease begins to emerge from the seals.
- Use the right grease. For most undercarriage applications, a high-quality, multipurpose lithium grease with EP (Extreme Pressure) additives is sufficient.
Greasing is fundamental, but it won't reverse wear.
Regular greasing protects key components from premature failure. However, if you notice excessive play or damage during maintenance, it's a sign that replacement is due. In our offer, you will find high-quality idler wheels, rollers, and chains from the KERTRACK brand. Contact us, and we will help you comprehensively care for the foundation of your machine!
