Cleaning a Tracked Undercarriage: Why It's Crucial, Especially in Winter
Cleaning a Tracked Undercarriage: Why It's So Important, Especially in Winter
10 Minutes of Work, Thousands in Savings
After a long day of work, the last thing an operator wants to do is scrape sticky mud from the undercarriage. It's understandable, but unfortunately, it's a mistake that can cost you thousands in unnecessary repairs over time. Regular undercarriage cleaning is the simplest, cheapest, and one of the most important forms of preventive maintenance. Let's explain why.
Why Does a Dirty Undercarriage Wear Out Faster?
1. The Sandpaper Effect
A mixture of mud, sand, and small stones creates an aggressive abrasive paste. It gets forced between all moving components: chain bushings, sprocket teeth, rollers, and idlers. Every rotation of the track causes friction that literally grinds down these key, hardened surfaces.
2. Increased Load and Fuel Consumption
Packed mud in an undercarriage can weigh tens or even hundreds of kilograms! The engine and drive system have to work much harder to move such heavy, clogged tracks. This leads directly to increased fuel consumption and unnecessary strain on the travel motors.
3. Hiding Faults
A thick layer of dried mud acts as camouflage for serious problems. It makes it impossible to spot early signs of failure, such as oil leaks from rollers or final drives, loose bolts, or cracks in the track frame.
Winter – When Mud Turns to Concrete
If a dirty undercarriage is a problem in the summer, it becomes a catastrophe in the winter. Leaving wet mud in the undercarriage overnight in freezing temperatures leads to:
- Extreme track tension: Frozen mud between the links and around the sprocket acts like a wedge. Trying to move the machine in the morning generates such enormous tension that it can lead to a cracked link or damage to the expensive recoil spring.
- Jamming and destroying rollers: Frozen chunks of dirt can completely block track rollers. Moving a machine with a seized roller will cause it to be ground flat by the rubbing track in minutes.
- Damage to seals: The expansion of freezing water and the abrasive force of frozen dirt can damage the seals on rollers and travel motors, leading to oil leaks and component seizure.
How to Properly Clean the Undercarriage
It's simple. At the end of each workday:
- Use a track spade or a regular shovel to remove the largest clumps of mud and rocks from between the rollers, sprockets, and from the track frame.
- If you have access to a pressure washer, rinse off the remaining dirt. Remember not to aim a strong stream of water directly at the seals of the final drives or other sensitive components.
Remember!
What you scrape off the undercarriage today is money you won't spend on parts tomorrow. Regular cleaning protects all components, such as high-quality undercarriage parts from the KERTRACK brand.
A clean undercarriage is an efficient undercarriage.
Regular cleaning and inspection are fundamental. However, if you notice that despite your care, your undercarriage components are already worn, contact us. We will help you select the right parts – from high-quality rollers, idlers, and chains from the KERTRACK brand to reliable TRK TRACK SOLUTIONS travel motors.
