A coolant temperature sensor, which is a key component of the cold start advance system (KSB - Kaltstartbeschleuniger). Its function is to monitor the engine temperature and, when it is low, send a signal to the injection pump to advance the injection timing and increase the fuel dose. This facilitates starting in low temperatures and ensures smooth operation of a cold engine.
Aftermarket quality product – an intelligent choice combining excellent quality with an attractive price.
| Brand (Machine Type) | Model |
|---|---|
| JCB (Backhoe Loaders) | 2CX, 3CX, 4CX (with Perkins engines, manufactured before approx. 2005) |
| JCB (Telehandlers) | Loadall (older models with Perkins engines) |
| JCB (Tractors) | FASTRAC (models with Perkins engines) |
| JCB (Other Machines) | Wheel Loaders, ROBOT, Forklifts with Perkins engines |
The list above is for reference. It is crucial to ensure that your machine is fitted with a Perkins engine.
Problems with the sensor can result from a contaminated cooling system. When replacing the sensor, it is a good idea to check the condition of the coolant. If it is cloudy or rusty, it should be replaced with new, high-quality HYPTRON fluid to ensure a correct temperature reading and protection for the entire system.
The cold start sensor is crucial for easy engine starting in low temperatures. Its failure makes the engine "think" it is always warm, which leads to starting problems, rough running, and excessive white smoke until the unit reaches operating temperature.

This is a very common cause of cold starting problems in Perkins engines. Other possible reasons include worn glow plugs, a faulty solenoid on the injection pump, low compression, or air in the fuel system.
2. How can I check if my old sensor is faulty? The simplest method is to measure its resistance with a multimeter. When the engine is cold, the resistance should be high, and it should decrease as it warms up. No change in resistance, or no resistance at all, indicates a failure.
3. Does this sensor also control the temperature gauge on the dashboard? No. This sensor only sends a signal to the injection pump. The dashboard gauge is controlled by a separate sensor, usually with a single pin.
