A key component of the wet brake pack – this is a precision-made steel brake separator plate by FEROSTEM. It is designed for the drive axles in newer generation CATERPILLAR backhoe loaders, including 428C, 428D, 432D, 438C, 442D and others. The separator plate operates in an oil bath, alternating with the friction discs. Its perfectly flat, high-strength steel surface and precise thickness (4.5 mm) are essential for ensuring correct braking force, proper friction, and effective heat dissipation from the brake pack.
FEROSTEM is a specialized manufacturer of brake system components, delivering high-quality discs and plates that are precisely engineered to meet the rigorous demands of construction machinery, ensuring safety and durability.

Servicing wet brakes in a drive axle is an advanced repair. It requires the machine to be securely supported on stands and involves removing heavy components (wheels, planetary hub). A faulty brake system is a fatal hazard. Ensure the system is properly bled after repair.
The steel separator plate is the friction counter-surface in a wet brake pack. It alternates with the friction discs. A piston compresses this pack, and the friction between the plates and discs creates the braking force. Wear or damage to these plates is a primary cause of brake failure.

A Separator Plate (9R9401) is a smooth, solid steel disc with an outer positioning lug. A Friction Disc (sold separately) has a friction material (like sintered bronze) and internal teeth (splines) that engage the axle shaft.
2. Can I just replace the worn friction discs and reuse these steel plates? This is highly discouraged. If the friction discs are worn, the steel plates are almost certainly overheated, discolored, or warped. Reusing old plates with new friction discs will cause the new discs to be destroyed very quickly and will result in a loss of braking power.
3. What is the difference between this plate (9R9401) and 9R2476?Both are steel separator plates for CAT machines, but they have completely different dimensions. This plate (9R9401) has an inner diameter of 124 mm and is 4.5 mm thick (for 428C/D). The older plate (9R2476) has an inner diameter of 114.3 mm and is 2.7 mm thick (for 428/428B). They are not interchangeable.
