An essential mounting component – this is a complete, two-piece side retainer set for teeth in the CATERPILLAR J400 system. The set consists of a pin and a sleeved retainer (lock). This is the key hardware that ensures the tooth tip remains securely locked onto the adapter during heavy work, preventing tooth loss.

The list above is for reference. It is crucial to verify the tooth system (J400) on your bucket's adapter.
Retainers are single-use items. Never reuse old, worn, or cracked retainers. Always wear safety glasses when hammering or removing pins, as metal components can chip.
The retainer (pin and lock) locks the tooth onto the adapter nose. The pin transfers lateral forces, and the retainer prevents the pin from sliding out. Damaged or worn retainers are the main cause of losing teeth during operation.

The number 7T3409 (this product) is typically the part number for the complete set. This set consists of one 7T3408 Pin and one 8E8409 Retainer (lock).
2. Will this set fit a J300 or J500 system? No. The CAT J-Series tooth systems are not interchangeable between sizes. A J400 set only fits J400 teeth and adapters.
3. Why must I replace the retainer every time I change a tooth? The retainer (lock) is a spring-steel component. During removal (knocking it out), it gets deformed and loses its tension and locking force. Reusing an old retainer will almost certainly result in losing the pin, and consequently, the entire tooth.
