Replacing boom bushings requires the arm to be immobilized and secured. Always use the service lock and certified axle stands. Never rely solely on the machine's hydraulics. Use safety glasses and gloves.
For a comprehensive and durable repair, always replace bushings in a set with new pins and seals. Regular greasing of the joints with high-quality HYPTRON grease containing molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) drastically extends the life of the bushings.
Bushings are sacrificial components designed to wear out to protect much more expensive parts like the arm or cylinders. Ignoring worn bushings leads to play, which in turn damages the pin bores (causing them to become oval), ultimately requiring a very expensive re-boring repair.

A spring bush is made from a rolled-up sheet of spring steel. Its outer diameter is slightly larger than the bore, so it locks itself in place after being pressed in. A solid bush (steel or bronze) is rigid and requires a very precise interference fit.
2. I have play on the pin, but the old bush looks okay. Do I have to replace it?Yes. Even if the bush is not cracked, the play indicates that its internal diameter has worn. Installing a new, tight pin in an old, worn bush will not eliminate the play and will lead to rapid wear of the pin. Both components should always be replaced at the same time.
3. What happens if I keep working with worn bushings?Prolonged operation with loose pins causes the bores in the arm or ram to wear out. The holes become oval, and their repair is very expensive and requires specialized machining (a mobile line boring machine). Replacing bushings in time is the cheapest way to avoid this failure.
