How to Choose Pallet Forks for a Loader? Capacity, FEM Class & Types | A Complete Guide
How to Choose Pallet Forks for a Loader? Capacity, FEM Class & Types | A Complete Guide
An Investment in Safety and Versatility
Pallet forks are arguably the most basic yet most versatile attachment for a telehandler, wheel loader, or backhoe loader. In a few moments, they turn a construction machine into a powerful forklift capable of unloading materials, moving pallets, or lifting structural elements. However, choosing "just any" forks is a direct path to dangerous situations and damage to both the goods and the machine. This guide will explain, step-by-step, all the key parameters you need to consider to make a safe and wise purchase.
Step 1: Load Capacity – The Most Important Safety Parameter
This is the absolute foundation where you must start. You need to consider two values:
- Machine's capacity: The maximum weight your loader (e.g., a Manitou or JCB) can lift.
- Forks' capacity: The maximum weight a pair of forks can carry at a specified load center (usually 500 or 600 mm).
The Golden Rule of Safety
The load capacity of the forks and carriage MUST ALWAYS be equal to or greater than the maximum lifting capacity of the machine. Never the other way around! Your machine might be able to lift 3 tons, but cheap forks rated for 2 tons could bend or break under such a load, leading to a catastrophe.
Step 2: Carriage and Fork Class (FEM) – The Key to Compatibility
This is the most important technical parameter that determines if the forks will fit the carriage. FEM is a European standard that defines the dimensions of the hooks on the back of the fork tines and the plate they hang on.
How to identify the FEM class?
Measure the distance (A) between the bottom edge of the top hook and the top edge of the bottom hook on your old fork or on the carriage:
- Class FEM 2 (II): The distance is 407 mm. Most common on backhoe loaders, small to medium wheel loaders, and smaller telehandlers.
- Class FEM 3 (III): The distance is 508 mm. Standard on most telehandlers and medium-sized wheel loaders.
- Class FEM 4 (IV): The distance is 635 mm. Used on large, heavy wheel loaders like those from Volvo or CAT.
The forks and the carriage must be of the same FEM class to fit together!
Step 3: Fork Length – Match it to the Load
The standard and most universal fork length is 1200 mm, perfect for handling standard Euro-pallets. Longer forks are useful for transporting non-standard, long loads. However, remember that the further the load's center of gravity is from the carriage, the lower the actual lifting capacity of the entire setup.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
1. What FEM class does my JCB 3CX backhoe have?
It is most often Class FEM 2, but it is always best to verify by measuring your carriage.
2. Can I lift people on the forks?
Absolutely not. It is extremely dangerous and illegal. A certified man basket is required for lifting people.
3. My forks are bent. Can they be straightened?
No. Forks are heat-treated in a precise process. Straightening them compromises the steel's structure, making them brittle and unsafe. Bent forks must always be replaced.
4. How do I check for fork wear?
The "10% rule" applies. If the thickness of the fork shank or heel is worn down by 10% of its original thickness, the fork has lost about 20% of its strength and must be taken out of service.
Choosing the right forks is an investment in safety and efficiency.
