The manifold gasket is a crucial seal between the cylinder head and the intake/exhaust manifolds. Its job is to prevent exhaust leaks and to stop unmetered air from being sucked into the intake system. If you hear a loud "chuffing" sound from the engine bay, smell exhaust fumes in the cab, the engine has lost power and runs rough, or you see black soot marks around the manifold, these are classic symptoms of a blown gasket. An intake leak disrupts the air-fuel ratio, while an exhaust leak can risk damage to the valves.

Before installing a new gasket, you must check the flatness of the manifold with a straight edge. A warped or cracked manifold will instantly destroy a new gasket.
Carefully remove all old gasket material and carbon deposits from the cylinder head and the manifold. A clean, smooth surface is crucial for a good seal.
Old studs and nuts lose their properties due to heat cycles. Always use new ones to ensure correct clamping force.
Tighten the manifold nuts in several stages and in the correct sequence (usually from the center outwards), using a torque wrench.
Answer: Yes, this is the main symptom. A loud, "chuffing" noise, especially on a cold engine, indicates a leak at the exhaust manifold.
Question: Can I reuse the old gasket?Answer: Absolutely not. This is a single-use gasket. It deforms permanently during installation and will not provide a seal a second time.
Question: Why did my new gasket blow out quickly?Answer: The most common reason is installing it on a warped manifold that has been distorted by heat. You must always check for flatness before installing a new gasket.
