Will Hydrogen Engines Replace Diesel? An Analysis of JCB, Deutz & Cummins Technologies
Will Hydrogen Engines Replace Diesel? An Analysis of JCB, Deutz & Cummins Technologies
In Search of the King's Successor
For over a hundred years, the diesel engine has been the irreplaceable heart of construction, agricultural, and heavy-duty machines. Today, in the era of energy transition and the drive for zero emissions, manufacturers are intensively searching for its successor. Alongside electric drives, one of the most serious candidates is hydrogen. Is this a real future for CAT, JCB, and Volvo machines, or just a technological curiosity? To understand this, let's look at two different approaches to hydrogen and see how the innovation leaders are doing it.
Two Paths for Hydrogen: Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) vs. Fuel Cell (FCEV)
When we say "hydrogen power," it can refer to two completely different technologies:
- Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE): This is a traditional piston engine, very similar to a diesel engine, but adapted to burn hydrogen instead of diesel fuel. Its main advantage is the use of familiar, robust technology and a lower production cost.
- Hydrogen Fuel Cell (FCEV): This is a small "power plant" where hydrogen reacts chemically with oxygen to produce electricity. This electricity then powers an electric motor that drives the machine. It is a more complex and expensive solution, but with higher efficiency and zero emissions (the only byproduct is water).
In the heavy machinery industry, where durability and resistance to harsh conditions are paramount, the hydrogen combustion engine (H2-ICE) is currently seen as the more promising and realistic solution for the coming years.
The Leaders of the Race: How Are the Big Players Doing It?
JCB – The Pragmatic Pioneer
JCB has focused on hydrogen combustion engines as the fastest and most practical route to decarbonization. Their technology is based on the proven DieselMax/EcoMax engine platform. The company already has dozens of working prototypes being intensively tested in backhoe loaders and telehandlers. JCB's philosophy is simple: use an existing, proven, and cheap-to-produce engine architecture, which simplifies service and lowers implementation costs for the end customer.
Deutz – The Engine Specialist's Bet
Deutz was one of the first in the world to introduce a production-ready hydrogen engine – the TCG 7.8 H2 model. This 6-cylinder unit offers power and performance comparable to a diesel engine with zero CO₂ emissions. As an independent supplier, Deutz aims to offer manufacturers a wide range of powertrains (the "Dual+" strategy), and hydrogen is a key element.
Cummins – The Fuel-Agnostic Platform
Cummins has developed a revolutionary "fuel-agnostic platform" concept. It involves creating a universal engine block base to which different cylinder heads can be fitted – for burning diesel, natural gas, or hydrogen. The company has already showcased powerful 15-liter and 6.7-liter hydrogen engines, targeting its offer mainly at truck and high-power machinery manufacturers.
Will Hydrogen Replace Diesel? A Realistic Assessment
The answer is: not soon, and not everywhere. Despite its huge potential, hydrogen technology faces two gigantic challenges:
- Production of "green" hydrogen: Cheap and environmentally friendly hydrogen (produced from renewable energy) is still very scarce.
- Infrastructure: There is no network of refueling stations, and storing hydrogen on a machine is complicated (requiring heavy, high-pressure tanks).
In the next 10-15 years, the diesel engine (especially when fueled by renewable fuels like HVO) will remain dominant. Hydrogen combustion engines have the best chance of becoming popular in large machines operating in closed ecosystems (e.g., mines, ports), where a single, central refueling station can be built.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is a hydrogen engine safe?
Yes. Manufacturers use extremely durable, certified high-pressure tanks that are often safer than traditional fuel tanks. The safety principles are just different.
2. Is a hydrogen combustion engine quiet?
No. It is an internal combustion engine, so its operation and noise level are similar to a natural gas engine. It is significantly quieter than a diesel, but it is not silent like an electric drive.
3. Will I be able to convert my current diesel engine to hydrogen?
Theoretically possible, but practically very complex and not cost-effective. It requires fundamental changes to the fuel injection, ignition, and engine control systems. This is a task for the engine manufacturer.
The future of powertrains is fascinating, but today's equipment needs care now.
Regardless of whether your machine uses EGR, DPF, or SCR, its reliability starts with cleanliness. Our offer includes high-quality REDX filters (fuel, air, oil) that protect the precision components of your modern diesel engine.
