What Grease for an Excavator? EP-2, Moly, Graphite | A Complete Guide
What Grease for an Excavator? EP-2, Moly, Graphite | A Complete Guide
Not All Grease Is Created Equal
Do you grab the grease gun and load the first "universal" grease you find into every zerk on your JCB, CAT, or Volvo excavator? This is a common mistake that, while seemingly harmless, can significantly shorten the life of expensive components. Different greases have different properties and are designed for different tasks. Using the wrong grease can be almost as damaging as not greasing at all. In this guide, we'll explain the differences between the most popular types of grease and advise on where to use them.
Anatomy of Grease: Oil, Thickener, and Additives
Every grease consists of three basic ingredients:
- Base Oil (70-95%): This is what actually lubricates.
- Thickener (5-20%): Acts like a sponge that holds the oil in place. Lithium-based soaps are the most common.
- Additives (0-10%): These are the "magic ingredients" that give the grease its special properties.
Overview of the Most Popular Greases
1. Lithium EP-2 Grease (The Universal Workhorse)
What do the symbols mean? "EP" stands for "Extreme Pressure." It means the grease contains special additives that activate under high load, creating a protective film that prevents metal-to-metal contact. "2" is the NLGI consistency grade, indicating a standard, universal thickness.
Application: This is the absolute "workhorse" and the first-choice grease for about 90% of lubrication points on a construction machine. It's ideal for greasing most pins and bushings in booms, arms, buckets, and for rolling bearings operating under normal conditions.
2. Molybdenum ("Moly") Grease (The Heavy-Duty Specialist)
What makes it special? It contains molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂). This is a solid lubricant that embeds itself into the microscopic imperfections of the metal, creating a "dry" film that provides emergency lubrication even if the base grease is squeezed out of the joint.
Application: It's designed for places with very high pressure and low-speed, sliding, or oscillating movements. It's the perfect choice for lubricating:
- The teeth of an excavator's slew ring,
- CV joints,
- Splines and sliding joints subjected to immense forces.
3. Graphite Grease (The Old-School Protector)
What makes it special? It contains graphite, another solid lubricant. Its main advantages are excellent water resistance and anti-seize properties.
Application: In modern machinery, its role as a lubricant for moving joints is limited. It works much better as an assembly and anti-seize compound. It is ideal for protecting bolt threads, open gears, or leaf springs from corrosion and seizing.
Summary: Which Grease and Where?
The Golden Rule
Unless the operator's manual for your machine (e.g., Komatsu or Liebherr) states otherwise, always use a high-quality EP-2 grease for lubricating pins and bushings. It is the safest and most universal choice.
Remember that proper and regular lubrication is the guarantee that high-quality components, such as pins and bushings from the CORESPEX brand, will reach their maximum lifespan, and that VICORTEX seals will be protected from contaminants.
Good grease is the cheapest spare part!
Choosing the right grease is the easiest way to extend the life of your machine. And when the time comes to replace worn parts, contact us! We will help you select perfectly matched pins and bushings from the CORESPEX brand and other necessary components to keep your machine working flawlessly.
