Renault Trucks: Historic Engines at the Heart of Renault and Claas Tractors
Renault Trucks: Historic Engines at the Heart of Renault and Claas Tractors
A Legacy of French Engineering
Although known today as part of the Volvo Group, Renault Trucks has a rich, independent history of producing its own highly-regarded engines. These units, especially from the MIDR series, were the heart of not only legendary French trucks but also the extremely popular Renault Agriculture tractors. After this division was acquired by Claas, these same proven engines powered tractors in their characteristic green colors for many years.
Keeping these robust French machines running is crucial for many farms. Our offer includes a wide range of spare parts for historic Renault (RVI) engines that operate in Renault and Claas tractors.
History: From Berliet and Saviem to the Volvo Group
- Beginnings in a Merger (1978): The Renault Véhicules Industriels (RVI) brand was formed from the merger of two historic French manufacturers: Berliet and Saviem.
- Expansion and Engine Development: In the 80s and 90s, RVI became a powerful player, acquiring the American brand Mack Trucks and developing its own acclaimed MIDR series engines. In parallel, the Renault Agriculture division produced popular orange tractors.
- Two Key Changes (2001-2003): In 2001, the truck division (Renault Trucks) was sold to the Volvo Group. Two years later, in 2003, the agricultural tractor division (Renault Agriculture) was acquired by the German company Claas.
Historic Renault Engines in Agricultural Machinery
MIDS / MIDR Series
This flagship 6-cylinder engine series was the primary power source for Renault's trucks and tractors. It was characterized by a robust design, direct injection, and great reliability.
- Use in Tractors: These engines were the heart of popular Renault Agriculture tractor series like the Celtis, Ares, and Atles. After the acquisition by Claas, these same units powered the first "green" Claas tractors, including the Ares, Atles, and Axion series, before being gradually replaced by John Deere and FPT engines.
In Which Machines Did Renault Engines Work?
- Agricultural machinery: Renault Agriculture tractors (orange), and subsequently the first series of Claas tractors (green).
- Commercial vehicles: Renault trucks (Midliner, Major, Premium, Magnum) and buses.
Legacy and Historic Position
Renault Trucks (RVI) was a pillar of the French industry and one of the largest commercial vehicle manufacturers in Europe. Its legacy has survived in two ways: as a truck brand within the Volvo Group and in the thousands of agricultural tractors that, under the Renault and later Claas brands, still reliably work in fields across Europe.
Interesting Facts
- Two Heritages: The Renault Trucks brand was formed from the merger of two long-standing French rivals – Berliet from Lyon and Saviem from Paris.
- The Iconic Magnum: The Renault Magnum, introduced in 1990, was a revolutionary truck with a completely flat cab floor, setting new standards of comfort for drivers.
- From Orange to Green: The acquisition of Renault Agriculture by Claas was one of the most significant events in the agricultural machinery market. For several years, the same proven tractor models, differing mainly in color, were available under both brands.
