JCB Transmission, Axle, and Brake Oils: How to Choose? A Complete Guide (HPG, HPD, ATF)
JCB Transmission, Axle, and Brake Oils: How to Choose? A Complete Guide (HPG, HPD, ATF)
The Fluids That Work Under the Most Pressure
In a construction machine, the engine oil looks after the heart, but it's the transmission and hydraulic oils that do the real "dirty work." They must operate under extreme pressure (EP), protect gears, cool brake and clutch discs, and simultaneously be non-aggressive to seals. Using one "universal" oil for all systems is one of the fastest ways to destroy a machine worth hundreds of thousands. Pouring axle oil into a transmission (or vice versa) can end in failure within days. In this complete guide, we will analyze the JCB fluid lineup to explain how they differ and why precise selection is so critical.
Key Differences: API GL-4 vs. API GL-5 (UTTO vs. STOU)
Before we look at the products, we must understand the two key standards that divide the world of gear oils:
- API GL-4 (UTTO Type Oil): An oil with a medium level of EP (Extreme Pressure) additives. Its formula is a compromise: it must protect gears from wear, but it must also be safe for non-ferrous metals (bronze, brass) used in transmission synchronizers. These oils are also designed to work with wet clutches (like in Powershift transmissions).
- API GL-5 (STOU/Axle Oil): An oil with a very high level of EP additives (mostly sulphur-phosphorus). It is designed for one purpose: to protect hypoid gears in drive axles, where crushing pressures exist. However, it is chemically aggressive towards synchronizers and can cause corrosion of bronze components.
The Mechanic's Golden Rule
Never put a GL-5 oil into a transmission that requires GL-4! The "better" (higher spec) oil will destroy the synchronizers. Conversely, putting a GL-4 oil into an axle that requires GL-5 will lead to rapid wear of the final drive gears.
Part 1: Transmission and Integrated System Oils
JCB Gear Oil HP Plus (HPG) – The Special Task Oil
Oil Type: UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil).
Standard: API GL-4.
Analysis: This is the key oil in the JCB lineup, designed specifically for the complex systems in backhoe loaders: the Powershift and Synchroshuttle transmissions. Why is it so special? Because it must meet conflicting demands:
1. Lubricate Gears: It must have enough strength to protect gear teeth from wear.
2. Manage Wet Clutches: It must have precisely balanced friction modifiers so the clutch packs in the Powershift transmission can engage smoothly and firmly, without slipping or jerking.
3. Protect Synchronizers: It must be safe for the bronze and brass components in Synchroshuttle gearboxes.
4. Work in the Hydraulics: In many backhoe loaders, this same oil also runs the main hydraulic system, powering the backhoe arm and loader.
JCB Gear Oil HP Plus is a formula that combines all these properties, ensuring smooth transmission operation, quiet performance, and corrosion protection. Using the wrong oil here (like an axle oil) would destroy the synchronizers or cause the Powershift clutches to slip.
JCB Gear Oil HP Plus (HPG) Part Numbers
| Container | Part Number |
|---|---|
| 5 Litres | 4000/2505 |
| 20 Litres | 4000/2503 |
| 200 Litres (Drum) | 4000/2545 |
Part 2: Axle Oils – Protection Under Extreme Pressure
Drive axles and planetary final drives are environments with completely different forces than transmissions. Hypoid gears generate immense friction and pressure (EP - Extreme Pressure). Therefore, they require oils with the highest API GL-5 specification.
a) JCB Axle Oil HP Plus (HPD) – For Axles with LSD
Oil Type: Axle oil with LSD (Limited Slip Differential) additives.
Standard: API GL-5 (LSD).
Analysis: This is the most advanced axle oil in the range. In addition to a powerful EP package (GL-5), it contains special friction modifiers. These are absolutely essential for the proper operation of Limited Slip Differentials, which are fitted in many JCB 3CX and 4CX machines. In an LSD axle, clutch plates are responsible for "locking" the wheels together. The friction modifiers in HPD oil ensure these plates engage smoothly, without violent jerks or noise (so-called "chatter").
Critical Advice: Pouring a standard GL-5 oil (without LSD additives) into an axle with a limited-slip diff will cause loud clunking, jerking during turns, and will ultimately destroy the clutch pack in the differential.
b) JCB Axle Oil HP – For Standard Axles
Oil Type: Standard EP axle oil.
Standard: API GL-5.
Analysis: This is a reliable, high-strength oil for heavily loaded drive axles and planetary final drives that do not have an LSD mechanism. Its main job is to create a tear-resistant oil film on the hypoid gear teeth, protecting them from seizure and wear. This is also the correct oil for axles with an "Open Differential."
c) JCB Gear Oil HP 90
Oil Type: Monograde gear oil.
Standard: API GL-5.
Analysis: This is a gear oil with a constant, high viscosity (SAE 90). It is intended for older types of manual gearboxes and axles that operate in hot climates and require a "thick" GL-5 oil. It is not suitable for modern Powershift transmissions or for operation in cold temperatures.
Part 3: Specialty Fluids – ATF and Brake Fluid
JCB Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)
Analysis: This is a completely different category of fluid, intended for automatic transmissions (not to be confused with Powershift). ATF has a very low viscosity, is strongly dyed (usually red), and contains a unique friction modifier package. Its job is to provide perfectly smooth shifts and cool the clutch plates. In construction machinery, it is used in some specialized transmissions or power steering systems.
JCB HP Brake Fluid (DOT 4)
Analysis: A critical fluid for disc brake systems. Its most important property is a very high boiling point and its hygroscopic nature (ability to absorb water). Brake fluid must resist boiling during heavy braking. At the same time, its tendency to absorb moisture from the air means it loses its properties over time (the boiling point drops), which is why it requires regular replacement (usually every 2 years).
Critical Warning: DOT vs. LHM!
Never confuse DOT 4 brake fluid with LHM mineral oil! Many machines (especially older JCBs and French machines) use LHM oil in the brake system. Pouring DOT 4 into an LHM system (or vice versa) will cause all rubber seals in the system to swell and disintegrate – from the master cylinder to the calipers. Always check what is written on the reservoir cap!
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the difference between UTTO (like JCB HPG) and STOU oil?
UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil) is a gear and hydraulic oil. STOU (Super Tractor Oil Universal) is a "one-size-fits-all" oil that can theoretically also be used in the engine. In practice, UTTO oils have much better, dedicated additive packages for Powershift transmissions and hydraulics.
2. I have an axle with an LSD. Do I have to use the expensive HPD oil?
Yes, absolutely. The cost of JCB Axle Oil HP Plus (HPD) is negligible compared to the cost of replacing the burnt clutch plates in the differential, which is a guaranteed outcome if you use a standard GL-5 oil.
3. I found metal shavings in my axle oil. What should I do?
A small amount of metallic "fuzz" on the magnetic drain plug is normal wear. However, if you find larger particles, shiny flakes, or chunks of metal, it is a sign of a serious failure (e.g., a damaged bearing or planetary gear in the final drive) and requires immediate inspection.
4. How often should I change the oil in my Powershift transmission and axles?
Always follow the machine's service manual. Standard intervals are typically 1000 hours for the transmission and 1000-2000 hours for the axles. It is crucial to always replace the transmission oil filter with a high-quality replacement, such as one from the REDX brand, at the same time as the oil.
Choosing the right oil is protecting your investment.
Using one oil for everything is a direct path to costly rebuilds. Every system in your JCB machine was designed to work with a dedicated fluid. By maintaining the cleanliness of these systems with regular REDX filter changes and using the correct oils, you ensure a long life for your brake discs, clutch packs, and VICORTEX seals. Contact us, and we will help you select the right filters and repair kits for your transmission and axles!
