JCB 4CX: More Power, More Capability. A Technical Analysis of the Backhoe King
JCB 4CX: More Power, More Capability. A Technical Analysis of the Backhoe King
The Legend's Bigger Brother
While the JCB 3CX is an icon of versatility, the 4CX has always been positioned as its more powerful, more efficient, and more "serious" sibling. Designed for the toughest jobs and difficult terrain, the JCB 4CX has been the flagship model in the British manufacturer's backhoe loader range for years. What exactly sets it apart from the legendary 3CX, and what unique features make it the only right choice for many companies? We invite you to a detailed analysis.
The Key Difference: Equal-Sized Wheels and Three Steer Modes (4x4x4)
The most important and instantly recognizable feature of the 4CX is its four equal-sized, large wheels. Unlike the classic setup on the 3CX (small front wheels, large rear wheels), this configuration, combined with all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering, gives the machine huge advantages:
- Unmatched Traction and Mobility: The larger front wheels and permanent 4WD mean the 4CX can handle the toughest mud and steepest climbs where a 3CX would have long given up.
- Exceptional Maneuverability: The three steer modes system is a hallmark of the 4CX:
- Front-wheel steer: For fast road travel.
- All-wheel steer: Drastically reduces the turning circle, making the machine extremely agile in tight spaces.
- Crab steer: Both axles turn in the same direction, allowing for precise sideways maneuvering, e.g., for backfilling a trench next to a wall.
- Greater Loader Performance: The larger front wheels and better traction mean significantly more pushing power, making the 4CX a much more efficient machine when working with the front bucket.
Trim Levels: Sitemaster and PRO
Like the 3CX, the 4CX was offered in different variants:
- Sitemaster: The standard, but already very well-equipped version, with 4x4x4 drive as standard.
- PRO: The top-of-the-line version, usually with the most powerful engine available, an Autoshift transmission with TorqueLock, Smooth Ride System (SRS), and advanced hydraulics as standard.
Engine and Drivetrain
The JCB 4CX has always been equipped with more powerful engines than the standard 3CX. Like its smaller sibling, until around 2005, these were Perkins engines, later replaced by JCB's own, more powerful Dieselmax/EcoMax design. Crucially, the transmissions (Powershift or Autoshift) and axles on the 4CX are much more robust and heavy-duty than on the 3CX to cope with the greater stresses from the equal-sized wheels and permanent 4WD.
Common Failures and Service – What to Look Out For?
The 4CX is extremely durable, but its more complex design creates a few extra points to check:
- Steering system on both axles: Regularly check the condition of tie rods, kingpins, and steering rams on both axles. Play in this system is dangerous.
- Axles and propshafts: Permanent 4WD means more load on the axles, differentials, and propshafts. Regularly check oil levels and look for leaks.
- Pin and bushing wear: Just like on the 3CX, this is a key inspection point. Intensive work as a loader puts more strain on the front arm, so the condition of these joints is extremely important.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is the 4CX always better than the 3CX?
Not always. If you primarily work in urban areas on paved surfaces and need maximum agility when working with the backhoe (e.g., against walls), the classic 3CX with its sideshift might be a better choice. The 4CX reigns supreme in rough terrain, in loading applications, and wherever traction is key.
2. Do parts from a 3CX fit a 4CX?
Many engine parts (depending on the year) and some cab components are the same. However, key drivetrain components like axles, final drives, and propshafts, as well as many hydraulic rams, are different – stronger and larger on the 4CX.
3. Is the 4CX more expensive to maintain?
Yes, due to its more complex drivetrain and larger tires, operating costs can be slightly higher. However, its greater productivity in many applications more than compensates for this.
