HVO Fuel: Is It a Better Diesel for Your Construction Machine?
HVO Fuel: Is It a Better Diesel for Your Construction Machine?
A New Fuel, Many Questions
A new fuel – HVO – is increasingly appearing at fuel depots. It's advertised as eco-friendly, better for the engine, and a 100% replacement for regular diesel. Is this true? Can you safely pour it into the engine of your JCB excavator, Volvo loader, or CAT dozer? In this article, we'll separate facts from myths and answer the most important questions about this revolutionary fuel.
What is HVO Fuel? It's NOT Biodiesel!
This is the most important piece of information to remember. Although both fuels come from renewable sources, they are produced in completely different ways and have different properties.
- Biodiesel (FAME): Produced through transesterification. Chemically, it's a fatty acid methyl ester. It tends to absorb water, can react with some seals in older machines, and has a shorter storage life.
- HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil): Produced in an advanced process of hydrotreating vegetable oils or animal fats. Hydrogen is used to remove oxygen and impurities. The result is a fuel that is chemically almost identical to the highest quality fossil diesel.
What does this mean in practice?
HVO is a "drop-in" fuel – you can pour it into the tank and use it without any engine modifications, and even mix it in any proportion with regular diesel. It does not have the disadvantages of biodiesel.
Main Advantages of HVO Fuel
- Up to 90% CO₂ Emission Reduction: Because the raw materials (plants) absorbed CO₂ as they grew, the overall emission balance is extremely favorable.
- Cleaner Combustion and DPF Protection: HVO is virtually free of sulfur and aromatics. Its combustion generates significantly fewer particulates (soot), which has a beneficial effect on the DPF, extending its life and reducing the frequency of regeneration.
- Excellent Winter Properties: HVO has a much lower cloud point than standard diesel, meaning no problems with paraffin waxing and fuel filter clogging even in severe frosts.
- High Cetane Number: Ensures smoother, quieter engine operation and easier starting.
- Longer Storage Life: It is more chemically stable than diesel and biodiesel, reducing the risk of microbial growth in the tank.
Can I Use HVO in My Machine?
This is the key question. The golden rule is: always check the official statement of the engine manufacturer. The good news is that almost all leading manufacturers have officially approved the use of HVO100 in their modern engines (usually Stage IV and Stage V compliant). This includes brands such as:
- Volvo CE, Scania, Deutz, FPT (Iveco), JCB, Caterpillar, Cummins, Perkins, MAN, Liebherr, Kubota, Yanmar.
For older machines without official approval, the risk is much lower than with biodiesel because HVO is chemically stable and does not react with seals. Nevertheless, the decision is at your own risk.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is HVO the same as "eco-diesel" at the gas station?
No. "Eco" or "premium diesel" fuels are usually regular diesel with performance-enhancing additives and a small blend of biodiesel (FAME). HVO100 is a 100% synthetic fuel.
2. Do I need to modify my engine to use HVO?
No. For approved engines, it is a 100% "drop-in" fuel, meaning you just fill up and go.
3. Can I mix HVO with regular diesel fuel?
Yes. HVO is fully miscible with diesel in any proportion.
4. Does using HVO affect the machine's warranty?
If the engine manufacturer has officially approved the use of HVO (compliant with the EN 15940 standard) in your model, it has no effect on the warranty.
HVO is a step towards a cleaner job site, but clean filters are always essential!
Even the cleanest fuel won't help if the injection system is contaminated. Regardless of whether you use diesel or HVO, regular replacement of fuel filters is absolutely crucial to protect your precision injectors. In our offer, you will find high-quality REDX filters for your machine. Contact us to select the right filters and care for your engine!
