How to Properly Replace Excavator Glass: A Step-by-Step Guide and Adhesive Selection
How to Properly Replace Glass in an Excavator? A Step-by-Step Guide and Adhesive Selection
More Than Aesthetics – A Foundation of Safety
A cracked or shattered window in an excavator, loader, or other construction machine is much more than a cosmetic problem. It's a real threat to the operator's safety, a loss of working comfort (noise, weather conditions), and a risk of damage to expensive electronics inside the cab. Replacing glass, especially bonded glass, may seem like a simple task, but in reality, it is a technological process where the devil is in the details. Skipping one step or using the wrong materials can lead to leaks, frame corrosion, and even the spontaneous cracking of a new, expensive piece of glass. In this guide, we will walk you through the entire process step-by-step.
Choosing the Right Glass – They Are Not All the Same
Before you start, you need the right glass. Our offer includes glass for almost every construction machine – from JCB and CAT to Volvo and Komatsu. We offer all types:
- Tempered Glass: The most common type in construction machinery. Our glass is homologated and compliant with ECE R43 standards. In case of impact, it shatters into thousands of small, blunt pieces, minimizing the risk of injury.
- Laminated Glass: Consists of two layers of glass bonded together with a PVB film. In case of breakage, the film holds the fragments together. Used mainly for front windshields.
- Flat and Curved Glass: Shaped to match the cab's design.
- Glass with Frit (Silk-Screen Print): With a black ceramic border that protects the adhesive from UV rays and provides an aesthetic finish.
- Athermic (Green-Tinted) Glass: Reduces heat buildup inside the cab.
Replacing Bonded Glass Step-by-Step
Step 1: Preparation and Removal of the Old Glass
- Secure the machine and interior: Park the machine on level ground. Protect the upholstery and dashboard inside the cab with a protective film to shield them from glass fragments and adhesive residue.
- Remove exterior components: Remove wiper arms and blades, plastic cowls, decorative trims, and any external seals.
- Disconnect electronics: If there are any sensors, mirrors, or cameras on the glass, carefully disconnect them.
- Cut out the glass: This is a key step. Use a specialized wire-out tool, a cold knife, or an oscillating tool to precisely cut through the old polyurethane adhesive bead. Be careful not to damage the paint on the cab frame.
- Remove adhesive residue: After removing the glass, use a special chisel or knife to trim the old adhesive from the frame, leaving a flat layer of about 1-2 mm. This layer will serve as an ideal base for the new adhesive. Do not scrape the adhesive down to the bare metal!
Step 2: Preparation of the Frame and New Glass
- Inspect and repair the frame: Check the frame for corrosion (especially if the old glass was leaking). Any rust spots must be thoroughly cleaned and treated with an anti-corrosion primer.
- Degrease the frame: Use a special activator (cleaner) to thoroughly degrease and clean the remaining layer of old adhesive and the paint on the frame.
- Apply Primer: Apply a thin, even layer of black primer to the prepared frame (and any bare metal spots). It acts like a double-sided tape, increasing the adhesive's grip and protecting it from UV rays.
- Prepare the new glass: Thoroughly wash and degrease the new glass, especially its inner side. Apply activator to the black frit band, and then, if required by the adhesive system, a thin layer of primer as well.
Critical Step for JCB 3CX/4CX!
For door glass in JCB backhoe loaders (e.g., 827/80143, 827/80144), you must inspect the condition of the metal door frame before installation. These frames often get bent. Installing glass into a bent frame creates immense stress in the glass, leading to it spontaneously cracking, often a few days after installation. The frame must be straightened first!
Step 3: Installation of the New Glass
- Apply the adhesive: Cut the nozzle of the polyurethane adhesive cartridge into a "V" shape. Apply a continuous, uniform bead of adhesive to the glass or the frame, ensuring the correct height and shape.
- Install the glass: Using suction cups, carefully and precisely set the new glass in place. Gently press it down to ensure the adhesive spreads evenly. Do not move the glass after it has been set.
- Secure the glass: Use adhesive tape to secure the glass to the frame to prevent it from sliding down before the adhesive starts to cure.
- Reinstall components: Reinstall the seals, trims, and any other components you removed earlier.
Step 4: Curing Time
This is a crucial stage. The safe drive-away time depends on the type of adhesive, temperature, and humidity. Always follow the chemical manufacturer's recommendations. This is usually between 1 to 3 hours. Full curing takes about 24 hours – during this time, avoid working in rough terrain that generates cab stress.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I use silicone instead of windshield adhesive?
Absolutely not! Silicone lacks the necessary structural strength. Bonded glass is a structural component of the cab. Using silicone risks the glass falling out during operation or in an accident.
2. Do I have to use primer and activator?
Yes, it is critical for ensuring a durable and leak-proof bond. Skipping these steps is the most common cause of subsequent leaks and corrosion.
3. Can I replace the glass in the rain or cold?
It is not recommended. Polyurethane adhesives cure with ambient moisture, but rain can wash out the fresh bead. Low temperatures drastically slow down the curing process.
