Final Drive Oil Change: How Often, What Oil, and How to Do It?
Final Drive Oil Change: How Often, What Oil, and How to Do It?
The Cheapest Insurance Against the Most Expensive Failure
Changing the oil in a final drive is like changing the engine oil, only... it's often more critical because everyone forgets about it. This is the single most important maintenance task that protects one of the most expensive and hardest-working components on your machine. Neglecting this simple and cheap procedure is the number one cause of catastrophic final drive failures. This guide will explain everything you need to know.
Why is Changing Final Drive Oil So Important?
- Extreme Loads: The planetary gearbox inside the final drive multiplies torque, creating immense forces and high temperatures on the gear teeth. The oil is the only barrier preventing them from grinding themselves to dust.
- Small Oil Volume: A typical mini-excavator final drive holds only 1-2 liters of oil. This small amount has to work under extreme conditions, causing it to lose its lubricating properties quickly.
- Contamination Risk: During operation, microscopic metal particles from wearing gears and bearings get into the oil. Over time, the oil turns into a grinding paste that destroys the gearbox from the inside.
How Often to Change and What Oil to Use?
Frequency:
The golden rule is: always follow your machine's operator's manual. If you don't have access to it, use these general guidelines:
- First change on a new machine (or new final drive): after approx. 250-500 hours.
- Subsequent changes: every 1000-2000 hours, but at least once a year, whichever comes first.
If the machine works in harsh conditions (water, mud, steep slopes), cut this interval in half!
What Oil?
Again – check the manual. Most commonly, a high-quality gear oil with a viscosity of SAE 80W-90 or 85W-140 and an API GL-5 quality class is used. Never use engine or hydraulic oil unless the manual specifically allows it!
Step-by-Step Oil Change
- Preparation: Warm up the oil by driving the machine for a few minutes. Park on level ground.
- Position the final drive: Rotate the track so that the drain plug is at the very bottom (6 o'clock position), and the level/fill plugs are horizontal or at the top.
- Drain the oil: Place a container underneath. Remove the drain plug (bottom) and the fill plug (top) – this allows air in and speeds up draining. Check the old oil for metal shavings.
- Filling: Reinstall the drain plug. Pump new oil into the top (fill) hole until it starts to come out of the side (level) hole.
- Set the level: Wait until the excess oil stops dripping from the level plug hole. When it just drips, the level is perfect.
- Close the plugs: Securely tighten the fill and level plugs. Clean the housing. You're done!
An hour of work and a liter of oil today saves thousands tomorrow.
If it's already too late and a failure has occurred, repair is rarely cost-effective. In that case, the best solution is to replace the entire unit. In our offer, you will find reliable travel motors from the TRK TRACK SOLUTIONS brand. Contact us, and we will help you choose the perfect model!
