Final Drive Failure - 5 Symptoms and Maintenance Tips
Final Drive Failure - 5 Symptoms and Maintenance Tips
A Hidden but Critical Component
The final drive, also known as a travel motor or track drive, is one of the most important, hardest-working, and most expensive components of a tracked undercarriage. If the machine's engine is its heart, the final drive is like the precise and powerful "ankle joint" that transmits all the power to the tracks. Its failure means one thing – immediate machine immobilization and costly downtime. That's why it's so important to recognize the early signs of trouble and know how to care for this key component.
How Does a Final Drive Work?
A final drive is an integrated assembly consisting of two main parts:
- The Hydraulic Motor: It receives high-pressure oil from the machine's main pump and converts its energy into high-speed rotational motion.
- The Planetary Gearbox: A set of gears that reduces the high speed from the hydraulic motor while multiplying its torque. This immense torque is what's needed to turn the sprocket and move the multi-ton machine.
5 Symptoms of Impending Final Drive Failure
Never ignore these warning signs!
1. Oil Leaks
This is the most important and most common symptom. A gear oil leak (thick, dark fluid) from around the sprocket indicates a damaged main seal. Ignoring a leak will lead to the gearbox running "dry," which will result in its complete destruction in a short time.
2. Loud, Grinding Noises
Any unnatural, loud noises (grinding, scraping, knocking) during travel is a sign that something is wrong inside. It usually means bearings have failed or gear teeth are damaged and grinding against each other. The final drive is destroying itself from the inside.
3. Loss of Power / "Weak Travel"
If the machine starts to "pull" to one side, struggles to climb grades it previously handled with ease, or one of the tracks turns noticeably slower, it may indicate internal wear in the hydraulic motor (loss of pressure) or severe mechanical resistance from failing gears/bearings.
4. Overheating
A final drive housing that is extremely hot to the touch after a short period of operation indicates extreme internal friction, likely due to low oil level or failing bearings. The heat rapidly degrades the remaining oil and accelerates the destruction of the metal parts.
5. Metal Shavings in the Oil
When changing the final drive oil, pay attention to its appearance. The presence of a large amount of metal shavings is proof that the gearbox is being destroyed internally. This is the last call for action.
How to Maintain Final Drives? Simple Rules, Big Savings
- Regularly check and change the oil! This is the absolute foundation. There is very little oil in a final drive, and changing it is cheap. Do it according to the intervals in the machine's manual (usually every 500-1000 hours).
- Watch for leaks. A daily walk-around inspection must include checking the area around the sprockets.
- Avoid bad habits. Aggressive driving, unnecessary counter-rotations, and working on steep side slopes put extra strain on the final drives.
- Take care of the rest of the undercarriage. An overly tight track generates huge stress on the final drive. Maintain proper tension and ensure your KERTRACK rollers and idlers are in good condition.
Is your final drive leaking, noisy, or weak? Repair is often not cost-effective.
The fastest and most reliable solution is to replace it with a new, complete unit. In our offer, you will find high-quality, technologically advanced travel motors from the TRK TRACK SOLUTIONS brand, which will restore your machine to full efficiency.
