Leaking Final Drive? Diagnosing and Replacing "Duo Cone" Seals
Leaking Final Drive? Diagnosing and Replacing "Duo Cone" Seals
A Ticking Time Bomb Under Your Machine
A leak of thick, dark oil from around the drive sprocket is one of the worst signals a tracked machine can give. This isn't "minor sweating" – it's a ticking time bomb counting down to a catastrophic and extremely expensive final drive failure. In almost all cases, the culprit is a small but crucial component: a mechanical seal, known as a "duo cone" or "floating seal."
What Is a Duo Cone Seal and How Does It Work?
This is not a regular oil seal. A duo cone seal is an advanced system consisting of two perfectly smooth, mirror-polished metal rings and two rubber O-rings. One metal ring is mounted in the stationary final drive housing, and the other in the hub that rotates with the sprocket. The rubber O-rings press the two metal rings together with immense force, creating a perfect seal that still allows for rotational movement. Its job is twofold:
- To keep the thick gear oil inside the final drive.
- To keep dirt, sand, and water from the outside from getting into the gearbox.
Diagnosing the Leak – Step by Step
1. Identify the Type of Oil
Thick, dark, with a characteristic gear oil smell: This is oil from the planetary gearbox. In 99% of cases, the duo cone seal is to blame. Loss of this oil leads to gearbox seizure.
Thinner, lighter hydraulic oil: If the leak is visible closer to where the drive mounts to the machine frame, the problem might be the hydraulic motor's shaft seal, not the duo cone seal. This is also a serious fault.
2. Check the Oil Level in the Final Drive
Position the machine so the fill and drain plugs are horizontal (at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions). Remove the fill plug. If no oil comes out, it means the level is low (leaking out). However, if oil spurts out under pressure, it means hydraulic oil from the travel motor is leaking into the gearbox, pressurizing it and forcing gear oil out through the duo cone seal. The root cause is the motor seal, but the duo cone is also compromised.
Duo Cone Replacement – A Job for Precision
Replacing this seal requires removing the final drive and sprocket. It's a job for experienced mechanics because two elements are critical:
- Absolute cleanliness: Even the smallest grain of sand between the metal ring surfaces will destroy the new seal.
- Proper installation: Special tools are used to install the rings. The polished surfaces must not be touched with bare fingers, as skin oils can cause them to overheat and wear out quickly.
When is repair not cost-effective?
If the leak was ignored for a long time and the final drive ran with low oil, it's almost certain that the bearings and gears are already damaged. In this case, replacing only the seal is just "treating the symptoms" – the final drive will fail again soon. The only sensible solution is to replace the entire unit.
