What Grease to Choose? A Complete Guide to JCB Greases (HP Blue, MPL-EP Red, Breaker)
What Grease to Choose? A Complete Guide to JCB Greases (HP Blue, MPL-EP Red, Breaker)
More Than Just "Grease": Your Machine's Silent Guardian
Regular greasing is the most basic, yet most important, service task an operator can perform for their machine. This simple, daily procedure determines the lifespan of components worth tens of thousands – pins, bushings, bearings, and slew rings. However, a very common mistake is to think that "grease is grease." Nothing could be further from the truth. Using the wrong grease (e.g., a simple chassis grease on excavator pins) is almost as harmful as not greasing at all. JCB, as a manufacturer of machines working in the toughest conditions, has developed a whole range of specialized greases, each with different properties and a different purpose. In this complete guide, we will analyze their composition and advise on which to use where.
Anatomy of Grease: What Do "EP", "Lithium", and "MoS₂" Mean?
Grease is not just thick oil. It's a base oil (e.g., mineral) "trapped" in a carrier called a thickener (e.g., lithium soap), enriched with a package of additives. When choosing a grease, you must pay attention to these three elements:
- Thickener (Base): The most popular is Lithium Complex. It gives the grease excellent mechanical stability, a high dropping point (it doesn't melt easily), and good water resistance.
- EP (Extreme Pressure) Additives: Crucial for construction machinery. This is a chemical package that activates under very high pressure, forming a protective film on the metal to prevent seizure and cold welding.
- Solid Additives (e.g., MoS₂, Graphite): The addition of molybdenum disulphide (MoS₂) or graphite creates an additional, "dry" lubricating layer that protects components even after the base oil has been squeezed out. It is ideal for slow-moving but extremely high-load connections (e.g., a slew ring).
Part 1: Multi-Purpose Greases – Blue vs. Red
These are the two most popular greases in the JCB range, intended for daily lubrication of most points on the machine. While both are high-quality, they have different properties and applications.
a) JCB Special HP Grease (Blue)
Profile: This is the premium, "flagship" JCB grease for the toughest jobs. It is a lithium complex-based grease containing an EP additive package and molybdenum disulphide (MoS₂). Its blue color makes it easy to identify.
Key Properties:
- Extreme Load Capacity (EP + MoS₂): The molybdenum additive makes it the ideal choice for pins and bearings subjected to the highest shock loads (e.g., the main boom and dipper pins, bucket linkage, slew ring).
- Excellent Adhesion ("Tackiness"): It is extremely "sticky," which makes it adhere perfectly to metal surfaces and resist being washed out by water, mud, or rain.
- High Thermal Stability: It maintains its properties over a very wide range of operating temperatures, not melting or "running out" of the joint in summer.
Application: Main pivot pins on backhoes, excavators, loaders; slew ring bearings; cylinder pins – anywhere high-pressure and shock loads occur.
b) JCB MPL-EP Grease (Red)
Profile: This is a high-performance, multi-purpose (MPL - Multi-Purpose Lithium) EP grease, but without molybdenum disulphide. Its red color also aids identification.
Key Properties:
- Versatility: Excellent for most standard applications in construction and agricultural machinery where a good EP-rated grease is required, but the loads are not as extreme.
- Good Water Resistance: Provides solid protection against water washout and corrosion.
- Mechanical Stability: Maintains its consistency during operation, doesn't "leak" out of pins easily.
Application: General chassis lubrication points (e.g., steering axle pins, driveshafts), lower-load attachment pins, wheel bearings in trailers and agricultural machinery.
Blue vs. Red: Which One When?
Fundamentally, the blue JCB Special HP Grease is the superior product due to the MoS₂ additive. If your machine works hard and you want to provide maximum protection to the critical pins on the boom, bucket, and slew ring – choose blue. The red JCB MPL-EP grease is an excellent, more economical choice for all other, less critical lubrication points.
Part 2: Specialized Greases – For Critical Tasks
Beyond everyday maintenance greases, there are products designed for absolutely extreme tasks where a standard lithium grease would fail in minutes.
a) JCB Breaker Grease (Hammer Grease)
Profile: This is not a grease – it's a specialized paste. Its base is not lithium, but graphite and copper.
Why is it different? A standard lithium grease has a dropping point of around 180-200°C. A hydraulic hammer tool bit heats up to 800°C or even 1100°C during operation. Using regular grease (even the blue HP) here would cause it to instantly melt, carbonize, and seize the tool bushing. Hammer grease is designed to withstand these temperatures.
Application: Exclusively for lubricating the tool bit and bushings in hydraulic hammers (e.g., JCB HM series). It prevents seizure and "welding" of the tool in the bushing under extreme pressure and vibration.
b) JCB Anti-Seize Compound (Copper Paste)
Profile: A copper-based assembly paste.
Application: This is not a lubricant for continuous operation, but an anti-seize agent. It's used during the assembly of components exposed to extreme heat and corrosion, such as exhaust manifold bolts, turbocharger bolts, or spark plug threads. Coating the threads with copper paste ensures they can be unscrewed years later without shearing off.
c) JCB Special MPL Grease
Profile: A multi-purpose (MPL) lithium-based grease, also fortified with molybdenum disulphide (MoS₂).
How is it different from Blue HP? The blue HP grease is a premium formula with a superior lithium complex base, better adhesion (tackiness), and higher water resistance. The black MPL with MoS₂ is a more economical choice that still offers excellent EP protection thanks to the moly, ideal for slow-moving, high-load components like slew rings or pins in less demanding conditions.
Part 3: How to Grease a Machine Correctly? The Key Principles
Having the best grease is useless if it's applied incorrectly. Just "pumping in grease" is not enough – it must be done with purpose.
- Rule 1: Cleanliness First. Before connecting the grease gun, always wipe the grease fitting (zerk) clean with a rag. Forcing the sand and mud collected on the fitting into the joint is worse than not greasing at all. You are effectively injecting a grinding paste directly into the precision-fit pin and bushing.
- Rule 2: Grease Until It Purges. Proper greasing involves pushing out the old, contaminated grease with the new. Pump in grease until you see fresh grease purging from the pin's seals. Only then can you be sure that all the old, water- and dirt-contaminated gunk has been removed.
- Rule 3: Frequency is Key. For construction machinery, there is no such thing as "greasing too often." The boom and bucket pins should be greased daily (or every 8-10 operating hours). In extreme conditions (working in water or sand), even more often. It's better to apply a small amount of grease regularly than to "fill it to the brim" once a week.
- Rule 4: Grease Under Load (if possible). Slightly lifting the boom or bucket off the ground while greasing relieves the pressure on the pin and allows the grease to reach the entire load-bearing surface, not just the path of least resistance.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
1. What's the difference between the blue HP grease and the MPL with MoS₂?
Both contain molybdenum, but the blue HP Grease is a premium product with a superior lithium complex base, better adhesion (tackiness), and higher water resistance. The black MPL with MoS₂ is an excellent, more economical EP grease for heavy sliding applications.
2. What happens if I use hammer grease on my bucket pins?
Nothing good. Graphite/copper pastes do not have the right lubricating properties for fast-moving pins. Worse, the hard particles of copper and graphite can act as an abrasive in the precision bushing.
3. What if I use regular (red) grease on my hydraulic hammer?
You will seize the hammer. Standard lithium grease will immediately melt and carbonize from the tool's temperature, leaving the bushing with no lubrication.
4. Can I mix greases of different types and colors?
This should be avoided. Mixing greases with different thickeners (e.g., lithium with calcium) can cause them to separate and lose their properties. Mixing colors of the same type (e.g., blue and red lithium EP grease) is less harmful but still not recommended.
5. How often should I grease the slew ring?
The slew ring has two separate systems: the bearing (raceway) and the gear teeth. The bearing should be greased at its interval (e.g., every 100 hours) while rotating the machine to spread the grease. The gear teeth should be greased more often, especially if working in dust, ensuring the grease covers the flanks of the teeth.
Grease is the cheapest spare part, and saving on it is the most expensive mistake.
Regularly using the correct grease is the only way to protect your pins, bushings, and bearings. In addition to high-quality greases, our offer includes precision-made pins and bushings from CORESPEX and durable hammer tools from HIMACORE, designed to work in the toughest conditions.
