New Emission Standards (Stage VI?): What's Next for Construction Machinery?
New Emission Standards (Stage VI?): What's Next for Construction Machinery?
After Stage V... What's Next?
The construction machinery industry has just adapted to the requirements of the Stage V standard, which introduced DPFs and AdBlue systems on a mass scale, and discussions about the next stage are already on the horizon. Are we facing a "Stage VI" standard? Does this mean even more complex and expensive systems in our machines? Or does the future lie elsewhere? In this article, we analyze the most likely scenarios and the technologies that innovation leaders like JCB, Deutz, and Cummins are already preparing.
A Quick Reminder: What Did Stage V Introduce?
The Stage V standard, which came into force between 2019-2020, was a true revolution. For the first time, in addition to a limit on the mass of particulate matter (PM), a strict limit on their number (PN) was introduced. In practice, this forced manufacturers to implement Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) on almost all engines between 19 kW and 560 kW. Combined with already tightened standards for nitrogen oxides (NOx), the complete EGR + DPF + SCR (AdBlue) system became the norm.
Will There Be a Stage VI? The Real Direction of Change
As of now (2025), the European Commission has not presented any official draft or timeline for a Stage VI standard for non-road mobile machinery. Moreover, many experts believe that further tightening of standards for classic pollutants (NOx, PM) in diesel engines has reached the limits of technological and economic feasibility. So, where is the focus of regulators and engineers heading?
The real "Stage VI" is the fight against CO₂ and decarbonization. The main emphasis is now shifting from what comes out of the exhaust pipe as soot and nitrogen oxides to the total carbon dioxide emissions over the entire life cycle of the fuel and machine.
How Are Manufacturers Preparing for the Future?
Industry leaders are not waiting for regulations – they are setting trends themselves by developing three parallel technological paths:
- Renewable Fuels (HVO): This is the "here and now" solution. Manufacturers like Volvo, Scania, Deutz, and FPT have widely approved their Stage V engines for use with HVO fuel, allowing for a CO₂ reduction of up to 90% with no machine modifications.
- Electrification: This is the fastest-growing trend in the compact machine segment (up to approx. 5-8 tons). Companies like Volvo CE, JCB, and Caterpillar already offer production models of mini-excavators and small loaders.
- Hydrogen Drives: This is the target solution for heavy machinery where batteries are too heavy and inefficient. Pioneers like JCB, Deutz, and Cummins are intensively developing hydrogen combustion engines (H2-ICE) that offer zero CO₂ emissions while maintaining power and refueling speed comparable to diesel.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
1. Does this mean the end of the diesel engine?
No, certainly not in the next 15-20 years for heavy equipment. The diesel engine will evolve – it will become even more efficient and adapted to burn renewable fuels (HVO, e-diesel). It will also be part of hybrid systems.
2. What can we learn from the Euro 7 standard for trucks?
The Euro 7 standard for on-road transport, in addition to tightening limits on NOx and particulates, introduces control over ammonia emissions (from SCR) and, for the first time, measures emissions during a cold start. If a Stage VI standard is ever created, it will likely go in a similar direction, requiring even more advanced sensors and on-board diagnostic systems.
3. What does this all mean for me as a machine owner?
It means that modern machines will become increasingly complex and expensive to purchase. At the same time, the role of proper, preventive maintenance – using high-quality oils, fuels, and filters – will become absolutely critical to avoid failures of these advanced systems.
The future of powertrains is full of challenges, but one thing remains constant.
Every machine, regardless of its emission standard or drive type, requires the highest quality service. Take care of your current Stage V equipment to ensure it runs reliably. Use only proven, high-quality REDX filters that protect the precise injection and aftertreatment systems. If you have a problem with the DPF or SCR in your machine, contact us! We'll help you keep your equipment ready for whatever the future holds.
