Hydraulic Hammer Not Hitting or Is Weak? A Step-by-Step Diagnosis
Hydraulic Hammer Not Hitting or Is Weak? A Step-by-Step Diagnosis
A Frustrating Silence on the Job Site
You position the hammer on a concrete slab, press the button in the cab, and... nothing. Absolute silence. Or, just as frustratingly, instead of a powerful impact, you only hear the tool anemicly "tapping" the material. A hydraulic hammer failure during a job is a huge problem and means costly downtime. However, before you start blaming the attachment itself and looking for service, it's worth performing a simple, multi-step diagnosis. In over half of all cases, the cause is surprisingly simple and lies with the machine, not the hammer.
Step-by-Step Diagnosis: From the Simplest Causes
Always start your diagnosis with the easiest to check and most common problems.
Step 1: Check the Machine Settings
This is by far the most common cause of problems. Modern excavators from CAT, JCB, or Volvo have different programs for various attachments stored in their computer. A hammer requires specific settings. Check the monitor in your cab:
- Is the correct attachment selected? Make sure the "Hammer" or "Breaker" program is activated in the machine's menu.
- Is one-way flow set? A hammer requires constant oil flow in one direction. If the machine is set to two-way (bi-directional) flow (e.g., for shears or a grapple), the hammer will not work.
- Are the flow and pressure correct? Check if the flow (l/min or GPM) and pressure (bar or PSI) values saved in the computer match your hammer's requirements. Wrong settings can cause poor performance or even damage the attachment.
Step 2: Check the Machine's Hydraulic System
If the settings are correct, the problem might be a lack of proper "supply" from the machine.
- Check the hose connection: Ensure the hydraulic quick couplers are 100% engaged. Sometimes they can "click" without fully opening the flow.
- Check the oil level and temperature: A low hydraulic oil level or overheated oil can cause a drop in performance for the entire system.
- Check the hydraulic filters: A clogged hydraulic filter acts like a blockage, restricting oil flow and "choking" the hammer. This is another reason why regular replacement with high-quality filters, like REDX filters, is so crucial.
Step 3: Check the Hammer Itself
If you are sure the machine is supplying the correct oil flow, it's time to inspect the hammer.
- The Key Component: The Gas Accumulator (most common cause of weak hits): At the top of the hammer is an accumulator filled with nitrogen. It is the expanding gas, not the oil, that provides the main force for the piston's impact. If the gas has leaked out (e.g., due to a ruptured diaphragm), the hammer will "tap" but will have no real breaking power.
- Worn or Jammed Tool: If the tool (chisel) is worn, it can get jammed in the housing's bushings, preventing it from moving freely to absorb the piston's impact.
- Incorrect Operating Technique: Remember the rules we've discussed previously. Trying to hammer without proper down-pressure ("blank firing") can cause the hammer's internal valves to not cycle correctly.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why does my hammer stop working when the hydraulic oil gets hot?
This usually indicates advanced wear and internal leakage in the machine's hydraulic pump or in the hammer itself. Thinner, hot oil escapes more easily through worn clearances, causing a drop in pressure.
2. Can I charge the gas accumulator myself?
It's possible with the right equipment (nitrogen bottle, charging kit) and knowledge, but due to the very high pressures involved, it is safest to have it done by a specialized service technician.
3. My hammer is "sweating" oil near the tool. Is this a problem?
Yes. It indicates a failure of the lower piston seals. Ignoring this will lead to contamination and seizure of the entire percussion mechanism.
Did your hammer fail at a critical moment? Don't waste time guessing.
Start with our checklist, and if the problem is more serious, contact us. We will help you diagnose the fault and select the right parts – from seal kits to complete, new hydraulic hammers from the HIMACORE brand. Remember that a healthy hydraulic system is essential, so take care of your REDX filters and VICORTEX cylinder seals to protect the entire system!
