How to Use a Hydraulic Hammer Correctly to Avoid Damage? The Most Common Operator Mistakes
A Powerful Tool That Demands Respect
A hydraulic hammer (or breaker) is one of the most productive, yet most expensive, excavator attachments. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most frequently and quickly destroyed – usually not due to material defects, but due to improper operation. Just a few basic mistakes can lead to a broken tool, destroyed seals, and even damage to the arm of your JCB or CAT excavator. This guide is a collection of absolutely crucial rules that can double the life of your hammer.
The Golden Rules of Correct Hammer Operation
- ALWAYS work perpendicularly: The tool must be positioned at a 90° angle to the surface being broken. Working at an angle generates huge side loads that destroy the bushings in the hammer housing and can break the tool.
- ALWAYS maintain constant down-pressure: The hammer must rest on the material with slight pressure from the excavator's arm. It needs something to "push against" so that the full impact energy is transferred into the material.
- ALWAYS stop hammering after 15-20 seconds: If the material does not break, stop. Reposition the tool a few centimeters and try again. Continuous hammering in one spot only overheats the tool and the hydraulic oil.
- ALWAYS start from the edge: Always begin breaking from the edge of a concrete slab or rock, gradually "chipping away" pieces. Never try to break a huge boulder with one blow in the center.
The Operator's "Deadly Sins" – Mistakes That Destroy the Hammer
1. Blank Firing
What is it? Operating the hammer "in the air" or striking the material without proper down-pressure from the arm.
Why is it deadly? The piston's impact energy, instead of being absorbed by the material, travels back up and damages the hammer's internal components (piston, seals, tie rods). It’s like hitting an anvil with a sledgehammer with no metal in between – all the energy destroys the tools.
2. Using the Hammer as a Lever or Bucket
What is it? Prying, pushing, or scraping material with the hammer tool and housing.
Why is it deadly? The hammer is not designed for this. It generates massive side loads that lead to a broken tool, destroyed bushings in the hammer housing, and rapid wear of the excavator's pins and bushings (even high-quality ones like CORESPEX).
3. Working Underwater Without a Kit
What is it? Submerging the hammer in water without a special underwater kit.
Why is it deadly? Water enters the chamber where the tool moves. Since water is incompressible, the piston's impact creates a shockwave that destroys seals and can lead to a cracked piston.
4. Excessively Long Hammering Cycles
What is it? Hitting a single spot continuously for 30 seconds or longer.
Why is it deadly? This causes extreme overheating of the tool (making it lose its hardness) and overheats the hydraulic oil in the entire machine. Hot oil destroys seals in the pump, control valve, and cylinders (like VICORTEX seals).
5. Ignoring Lubrication
What is it? Greasing the tool bushing too infrequently.
Why is it deadly? The tool-bushing interface works under extreme friction and temperature. It requires frequent lubrication with special, high-temperature chisel paste. Lack of grease leads to seizing and destruction of both components.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
1. How often should I grease the hammer?
Much more often than the rest of the machine! In continuous operation, as often as every 1-2 hours. Always use special chisel paste, not regular pin grease.
2. My hammer has a weak blow. What's the cause?
The most common cause is low nitrogen pressure in the hammer's gas accumulator. It could also be due to incorrect hydraulic settings on the excavator or internal wear in the hammer.
3. Can I re-sharpen a blunt tool?
Absolutely not. The tool is hardened to a specific depth. Grinding it removes this hard layer, causing the re-sharpened tool to wear out or break in no time.
Work smarter, not harder! Take care of your hammer.
Proper technique and regular service are the keys to your hammer's longevity and your savings. If your current attachment is worn out, check out our offer of reliable hydraulic hammers and other attachments from the HIMACORE brand. Also remember that working with a hammer puts a huge strain on the entire hydraulic system – keep your oil clean by using REDX filters. Contact us!
