How to Choose the Right Steel Track Shoes? A Guide to Types and Widths
How to Choose the Right Steel Track Shoes?
More Than Just a Piece of Metal
Choosing the right steel track shoes might seem simple – after all, it's just a piece of metal. In reality, it's one of the most important decisions that affects machine performance, undercarriage wear, and even fuel consumption. While they may look like a simple component, their shape and width are precisely engineered for specific working conditions. Choosing the wrong shoes is a direct path to problems and unnecessary costs. In this guide, we'll explain the key differences.
The Golden Rule: Use the Narrowest Possible Shoes
This is the most important rule followed by experienced mechanics and operators. Contrary to popular belief, "wider" doesn't always mean "better."
Why is narrower better?
Shoes that are too wide for the ground conditions create enormous stress on the pins and bushings in the track chains during turns. They are also heavier and create more resistance, which increases fuel consumption. Use wide shoes only when absolutely necessary – for work on very soft, swampy ground where low ground pressure (flotation) is needed.
An Overview of Track Shoe Types
1. Triple Grouser Shoes
Application: This is the most universal and common type of shoe for excavators. Characteristics: They have three low-profile grousers (bars). They provide a very good compromise between traction and ease of turning (low resistance). They also cause relatively little ground disturbance. They are ideal for most earthmoving jobs in mixed conditions (dirt, clay, some rock).
2. Single Grouser Shoes
Application: Mainly dozers and machines working in very hard, rocky terrain. Characteristics: They have a single, high, and aggressive grouser. They provide maximum penetration and grip on hard, rocky ground. Their disadvantage is very high resistance when turning and damage to any delicate surface.
3. Double Grouser Shoes
Application: Mainly for crawler loaders and machines that travel and maneuver a lot. Characteristics: They are a compromise between the traction of single grousers and the maneuverability of triple grousers. They provide better grip than triple grousers but generate less stress during turns than single grousers.
4. Flat or Swamp Shoes
Application: Machines working on finished surfaces (asphalt, concrete) or on very soft, swampy ground (LGP - Low Ground Pressure versions). Characteristics: They can be completely flat (for work on asphalt) or very wide with low grousers (for work in swamps). Their purpose is to distribute the machine's weight as much as possible and minimize ground pressure.
Conclusion: How to Make the Right Decision?
- Analyze your work: Where do you work most often? The 80% rule should dictate your choice of shoe.
- Stick to the "narrowest possible" rule: If you don't consistently work in a swamp, choose the standard, narrower shoe width for your machine model.
- For excavators, triple grouser shoes are almost always the best universal choice.
- For dozers in rock, choose single grouser shoes.
Choosing the right track shoes is key to performance and savings.
If your track shoes are worn or unsuitable for your work, you are unnecessarily wearing out the entire undercarriage and wasting fuel. In our offer, you will find high-quality undercarriage components from the KERTRACK brand. Contact us, and we will help you choose the ideal shoes, chains, and other components to optimize your machine's performance!
