Caterpillar Greases: A Complete Guide to Types, Colors, and Applications (Prime, Extreme, Multipurpose)
Caterpillar Greases: A Complete Guide to Types, Colors, and Applications
Cat Grease: A Liquid Structural Component
Why would a global giant like Caterpillar invest millions of dollars in developing its own line of greases? The answer is simple: because standard, off-the-shelf products failed to provide sufficient protection in the extreme conditions for which CAT machines are designed. The grease in a CAT 320 excavator working in a quarry or a CAT D6 dozer operating in 40°C heat isn't just an additive—it's a critical structural component, just as important as the pin or bearing it protects.
Using the wrong grease is a direct path to seized joints, worn-out bores, and multi-thousand-dollar repairs. In this complete guide, we will analyze the entire range of Caterpillar greases to explain what their mysterious names mean, how their colors differ, and which one is the ideal choice for your machine.
Anatomy of Grease: Decoding the Label (NLGI, Thickener, MoS₂)
To understand the CAT lineup, we need to know the three key concepts that define every grease:
1. NLGI Consistency Grade
This is the standard measure of grease "thickness." The lower the number, the more fluid the grease.
- NLGI 000: Very fluid, "semi-fluid." Used in arctic greases or enclosed gear cases.
- NLGI 0: Semi-fluid, like mustard. Used in extremely low temperatures (e.g., Cat Extreme Application Grease - Arctic).
- NLGI 1: Soft, like toothpaste. Good for central lubrication systems and low temperatures.
- NLGI 2: The most universal, "standard" grease (like peanut butter). Used for most pins and bearings in JCB and CAT machines.
2. Thickener Type (Base)
This is the "sponge" that holds the base oil. The thickener type defines the grease's key properties. Caterpillar relies on two types for its premium products:
- Lithium Complex: The base for universal and high-performance greases.
- Calcium Sulfonate Complex: The base for premium-tier greases. Provides superior EP properties and outstanding water resistance.
3. Solid Additives (Molybdenum - "Moly")
This is a key ingredient for heavy equipment grease. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) is a solid additive that plates onto metal surfaces. It creates a "dry film" lubricant that protects the pin and bushing from seizing, even if the base oil is momentarily squeezed out by an impact. Caterpillar clearly states the percentage of "Moly" in its greases (e.g., 3% or 5%).
Part 1: Lithium Complex Greases
This is the primary and most versatile group of greases in the CAT lineup, intended for a wide range of applications.
a) Cat Utility Grease
Profile: A basic, general-purpose grease.
Tech Specs:
- NLGI Grade: 2.
- EP Additives: Standard, does not contain Moly.
- Properties: Provides good protection against corrosion and oxidation.
- Temp Range: -20°C to +140°C.
Application: Ideal for low-load and low-speed applications. It's an economical choice for daily greasing of non-critical points – e.g., auxiliary attachment pins, door hinges, bearings in light-duty machinery.
Part Numbers (Cat Utility Grease)
| Package | Size | Part Number |
|---|---|---|
| Cartridge (EU) | 400 g | 452-6015 |
| Cartridge (US) | 390 g (14 oz) | 452-6011 |
| Pail | 16 kg (35 lb) | 452-6014 |
b) Cat Prime Application Grease
Profile: This is the "workhorse" of the CAT lineup. A higher-performance grease intended for the main lubrication points on most machines. It is colored red.
Tech Specs:
- NLGI Grade: 2.
- EP Additives: Fortified with 3% Molybdenum Disulfide (Moly).
- Properties: The Moly content provides additional wear protection under moderate shock loads. It resists softening and washout.
- Temp Range: -20°C to +140°C.
Application: The ideal choice for daily, regular greasing of boom and bucket pins on excavators and backhoe loaders (like JCB 3CX, CAT 428) working in standard conditions (soil, gravel). That 3% Moly is the key difference compared to a simple "Utility" grease.
Part Numbers (Cat Prime Application Grease)
| Package | Size | Part Number |
|---|---|---|
| Cartridge (EU) | 450 g | 452-6010 |
| Cartridge (US) | 390 g (14 oz) | 452-6006 |
| Pail | 16 kg (35 lb) | 452-6009 |
| Drum | 180 kg (400 lb) | 452-6007 |
Part 2: Premium Greases – Cat Extreme Application (Calcium Sulfonate Thickener)
While lithium-based greases are great for most jobs, in the most rigorous applications—underwater work, extreme shock loads, high dust—Caterpillar brings out its "ultimate weapon": greases based on a Calcium Sulfonate Complex. This is the absolute top tier of grease technology.
What Makes Calcium Sulfonate Greases Different?
This thickener base has unique properties that lithium greases lack:
- Inherent Water Resistance: These greases are almost "hydrophobic." They have outstanding resistance to washout from both fresh and salt water. They adhere perfectly to metal, forming a protective barrier even when submerged.
- Built-in EP Properties: The thickener itself has natural Extreme Pressure (EP) properties, which are then boosted by the "Moly" additive.
- High Corrosion Resistance: They provide superior protection against rust and corrosion, which is critical in wet working environments.
a) Cat Extreme Application Grease 1 & 2 (Gray Grease with 5% Moly)
Profile: This is the "armor-plated" CAT grease for the most critical joints, such as the bucket and boom pins on large excavators, which are subjected to constant impact and work in mud. Color: Gray/Black (due to 5% MoS₂).
Tech Specs:
- NLGI Grade: 1 (Grease 1) or 2 (Grease 2). The NLGI 1 version is "softer," designed for lower temperatures and auto-lube systems. NLGI 2 is the standard, all-purpose grade.
- EP Additives: Fortified with 5% Molybdenum Disulfide (Moly). This is the key feature, providing extreme resistance to impact and abrasive wear.
- Base: Calcium Sulfonate Complex.
- Temp Range: -20°C to +140°C (for NLGI 1), -15°C to +140°C (for NLGI 2).
Application: The most severe applications. All heavily loaded pins on excavators (e.g., CAT 320, 330, 336), dozers (D6, D8), and wheel loaders. Ideal for working in wet and dirty conditions (mines, river work, demolition).
Part Numbers (Cat Extreme Application Grease 1 & 2)
| Product | Package | Size | Part Number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extreme App Grease 1 (NLGI 1) | Cartridge (US) | 390 g (14 oz) | 452-5996 |
| Pail | 16 kg (35 lb) | 452-5999 | |
| Drum | 180 kg (400 lb) | 452-5997 | |
| Extreme App Grease 2 (NLGI 2) | Cartridge (EU) | 450 g | 452-6000 |
| Cartridge (US) | 390 g (14 oz) | 452-6001 | |
| Pail | 16 kg (35 lb) | 452-6004 | |
| Drum | 180 kg (400 lb) | 452-6002 |
b) Cat Extreme Application Grease - Desert
Profile: A specialized version of the calcium sulfonate grease, designed for extremely high ambient temperatures.
Tech Specs: NLGI 2, 5% Moly. Designed for ambient temperatures from +10°C to +50°C.
Application: Machines operating in the Middle East, North Africa, or in high-heat industrial settings. Part numbers: 452-7458 (450g), 452-6016 (390g).
c) Arctic Greases (Synthetic Base)
Profile: Greases based on a synthetic base oil. This allows them to remain pumpable in extreme cold where mineral-based greases would turn solid.
- Cat Extreme Application Grease - Arctic: NLGI 0, 5% Moly, synthetic blend. Protects down to -50°C. Part number: 508-2184 (390g).
- Cat Ultimate Arctic Grease: NLGI 000 (very fluid), 5% Moly, synthetic base. The ultimate grease for arctic conditions, protects down to -50°C. Part number: 621-7050 (180kg).
Part 3: Specialty Greases – For Critical Tasks
Beyond pin greases, Caterpillar offers a range of products for very specific applications where a standard EP grease would fail.
a) Cat Ball Bearing Grease
Profile: A grease based on a Polyurea thickener.
Why is it different? It contains no Moly or sulfur/phosphorus EP additives, which can be harmful to high-speed rolling bearings. It's designed for high speeds and high temperatures.
Application: Ball and needle bearings, sealed-for-life bearings, alternator bearings, fan drive bearings, and belt tensioners. Part numbers: 454-0292 (450g), 454-0291 (390g).
b) Cat Hammer Paste
Profile: A specialized assembly paste based on an aluminum complex, fortified with graphite and copper.
Why is it different? A standard lithium grease has a dropping point of ~200°C. A hydraulic hammer tool bit can reach 1000°C. Using regular grease here will cause it to melt and carbonize instantly. Hammer paste is designed to withstand these temperatures.
Application: Exclusively for lubricating the tool and bushings in hydraulic hammers. It prevents seizing and "welding" of the tool in the bushing. Part numbers: 130-6951 (390g), 133-8807 (5kg).
c) Cat High Vacuum Grease & Petro Gel
Cat High Vacuum Grease (6V-2055): A stiff silicone grease used as a sealant for electrical connectors and vacuum/pressure connections to protect against moisture.
Cat Petro Gel Amber (369-9451): An assembly compound (technical petroleum jelly) used to lubricate seals (like O-rings) during installation to prevent them from being cut or damaged.
Part 4: How to Grease a Machine Correctly? The Key Principles
Having the best grease is useless if it's applied incorrectly. Just "pumping in grease" is not enough – it must be done with purpose.
- Rule 1: Cleanliness First. Before connecting the grease gun, always wipe the grease fitting (zerk) clean with a rag. Forcing the sand and mud collected on the fitting into the joint is worse than not greasing at all. You are effectively injecting a grinding paste directly into the precision-fit pin and bushing.
- Rule 2: Grease Until It Purges. Proper greasing involves pushing out the old, contaminated grease with the new. Pump in grease until you see fresh grease purging from the pin's seals. Only then can you be sure that all the old, water- and dirt-contaminated gunk has been removed.
- Rule 3: Frequency is Key. For construction machinery, there is no such thing as "greasing too often." The boom and bucket pins should be greased daily (or every 8-10 operating hours). In extreme conditions (working in water or sand), even more often. It's better to apply a small amount of grease regularly than to "fill it to the brim" once a week.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the real difference between Cat Prime Application (3% Moly) and Extreme Application (5% Moly)?
Both are high-quality, but they differ in two key ways. Prime Application (3% Moly) uses a Lithium Complex thickener. It's an excellent, all-purpose grease for moderate loads. Extreme Application (5% Moly) uses the far superior Calcium Sulfonate thickener. This gives it a higher Moly content (5% vs 3%) and, more importantly, extreme, inherent resistance to water washout (including salt water). Extreme is for the heaviest applications where water and shock loads are present.
2. What happens if I use Hammer Paste on my bucket pins?
Nothing good. Hammer pastes (like Cat Hammer Paste) are not lubricants in the traditional sense. They are anti-seize compounds designed to prevent galling at extreme temperatures (over 1000°C). They do not have the proper lubricating properties for rotating pins. Worse, the hard particles of copper and graphite can act as an abrasive in the precision bushing.
3. What if I use regular pin grease (like Prime Application) on my hammer?
You will seize the hammer. Standard lithium grease has a dropping point of ~200°C. The hammer tool bit heats up to 1000°C. The lithium grease will instantly melt and carbonize, leaving the bushing with zero lubrication, which will lead to its destruction.
4. Can I mix greases of different types and colors?
This must be avoided. The worst mistake is mixing greases with different thickeners (e.g., Lithium vs. Calcium Sulfonate vs. Polyurea). This can cause a chemical reaction, grease separation, and a total loss of lubricating properties. Mixing greases of the same type (e.g., two different Lithium Complex EP greases) is less harmful but still not recommended, as the additive packages may be incompatible.
5. What is "Moly"?
"Moly" is short for molybdenum disulfide. It's a gray, crystalline powder added to greases to provide "dry" lubrication under extreme pressure (EP) and shock load conditions.
6. Why does Caterpillar even make its own greases?
As their official materials state, Caterpillar found that market brands failed to provide sufficient protection for their highly demanding applications. Therefore, they designed their own products specifically to protect and extend the life of Cat equipment working in the most rigorous environments on Earth.
Grease is the cheapest spare part, and skimping on it is the most expensive mistake.
Using the correct grease regularly is the only way to protect your pins, bushings, and bearings. In addition to high-quality greases, we offer precision-made pins and bushings from CORESPEX and durable hammer tools from HIMACORE, designed for the toughest conditions. Refilling a grease gun is much cheaper than line-boring a worn-out boom. Contact us, and we will help you select a complete service kit!
