Andoria: The Legend of Polish Motoring and the Reliable Heart of Our Machines
Andoria: The Legend of Polish Motoring and the Reliable Heart of Our Machines
The Heart of Polish Industry
Andoria is a legendary brand that for decades was the technological heart of Polish industry and transport. The engines produced in Andrychów, especially the iconic SW-400 "kaban," powered a huge portion of the machines that built post-war Poland – from Bizon combines and Autosan buses to construction machinery from Huta Stalowa Wola. Valued for their incredible durability, simple design, and ease of repair, they still operate in thousands of vehicles and machines across the country today.
Keeping these historic machines running is our mission. Our offer includes a wide range of spare parts for Andoria engines, which helps to keep these classics of Polish engineering in excellent condition.
History: From Andrychów to All of Poland
- Beginnings (1945): The Diesel Engine Factory was established in Andrychów. Initially, it produced simple engines for agriculture.
- The License That Changed Everything (1960s): A key moment was the purchase of a license from the British company Leyland Motors. Based on this, the 6C107 engine was developed and put into production in 1966, which became known as the SW-400 – the unit that motorized Poland.
- The Golden Era of the PRL: During the Polish People's Republic era, Andoria was a monopolist and a key engine supplier for the entire state-owned machinery industry, producing hundreds of thousands of reliable units.
- Transformation: After 1989, the company continued production, developing new designs, but it failed to maintain its former position against global competition.
Iconic Andoria Engines
SW-400 (6C107) - "Kaban" (The Boar)
An absolute legend. This 6-cylinder, 6.5-liter inline engine was an incredibly simple and "bulletproof" design. It earned the nickname "kaban" (meaning wild boar) due to its size, power, and characteristic sound. It was easy to repair and resistant to harsh conditions and low-quality fuel.
SW-266 (4C107)
The smaller, 4-cylinder, 4.36-liter brother of the "kaban." It shared the same basic architecture and reliability but was used in smaller vehicles like Żuk and Nysa delivery vans and forklifts.
In Which Machines Did Andoria Engines Work?
- Agricultural machinery: Bizon Super Z056 and Bizon Rekord Z058 combine harvesters.
- Commercial vehicles: Autosan H9 buses, Star trucks, Żuk and Nysa vans.
- Construction machinery: Fadroma loaders (e.g., Ł-200), HSW dozers and loaders (e.g., Ł-34 "Stalowa Wola").
- Stationary applications: Generator sets, pumps, industrial machine drives.
Legacy and Historic Position
Andoria was an absolute monopolist in the Polish engine market during the PRL era. Its simple and durable designs were perfectly suited to the realities of the time. Today, the brand's future lies in the hands of thousands of owners and mechanics who passionately keep these engines running, which is the best testament to their timeless, solid construction.
Interesting Facts
- British Roots of the "Kaban": The iconic SW-400 was based on a license for the British Leyland UE680 "Power Plus" engine. However, the Polish design was thoroughly modernized and adapted to local conditions.
- The Sound of the Polish Countryside: For decades, the characteristic, loud, and harsh sound of the SW-400 engine in a Bizon combine became the acoustic symbol of the Polish harvest.
Does your Bizon, Autosan, or Fadroma still run on an Andoria engine? That's a reason for pride and a testament to Polish engineering!
We help in selecting spare parts for these legendary engines. Our offer includes REDX filters, overhaul kits, pumps, and other components to keep your machine running with the same reliability it had decades ago. Contact us!
